Thor: Tales of Asgard turns out to be one of the stronger Marvel Animated films produced with Lionsgate. The story is overall satisfactory as a coming of age tale. Many of the characters come across as more well-rounded then in the other films. It show a rarely seen worldview of Loki not become a complete monster, frost giants being something other than chaotic baddies, and a time when Jotunheim and not Asgard was the most powerful kindgom. The brotherly bond between Thor and Loki is perhaps what stands out the best about it. This is rarely shown beyond lip service in other stories even those set with the two as children.
It did have its flaws. Several of the changes like the Warriors Three being hollow braggarts and the Norse Valkyries being turned into the Greek Amazons stand out like shore thumbs. Odin displays a surprisingly level of stupidity throughout. He lets Thor train, but makes it so the training does not benefit Thor at all despite the whole point of training. Animation wise, it is satisfactory but nothing to stand out or be memorable.
Overall, a decent show that manages to stuff quite a bit in despite a running time only a little over an hour. It is worth at least a rental to fans of Marvel. However, personally I would have preferred one about an adult Thor since all the other films we got were the adult versions. Still, it was good to finally get one where Thor was not shown in a bad light and the Hulk did not appear to show how great he was to everyone. I just wish they would tell a story that did not have Thor in someway get "humbled."
Main Better than other Marvel animated projects, but still lacking.
