this film kind of has a bad reputation. or i guess, i don't really know. i remember the first and second time i saw it. after recording it on cable i sat down with chicken nuggets or something and watched it and liked it. morality is something i always think about.
first, everything was black and white, like on tv. then, reality hit, and so, grey. but then more reality hit, and i realized i believe in right and wrong. if something can be pure evil, something must be pure good, right? right.
back to the movie. it's not perfect. it's strange to think of something so new to be allowed to compete with the classics, so comparing anything so new won't help. and like EVA, i think the best way to appreciate this film is alone. speaking of EVA...
robin williams is a fan. it's really good, odd trivia, so you (yes, you) probably already know that. recently, when i watched death to smoochy, somewhere past half way or so, robin's character is helped, sincerely, by a kid. he calls her an angel. so now i can't think of the movie, without the legacy of EVA. and it helps. all the love, and the truly touching moments, really shine through, and you can imagine and see how someday, maybe someday, a film nerd, a la tarantino, might take some influence, and thus make something great.
i don't really know if death to smoochy could ever really hang out with the godfather or il comformista and all that. but i like it. for me, it's good enough.
Main better than pop culture likes to think.
