Literature Follows a similar formula to Medaka Box
Review of what comes off as the 'first' season:
At first glance, Inou Battle Wa Nichijoukei No Naka De comes off like a basic harem series that happens to come with the chuunibyou gimmick; a modern cliche that has since become a staple in the anime industry ever since "Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions" became a huge hit.
However, beyond this premise, there is potential there for a genre shift similar to what occurred with another series (Medaka Box) that changed from Slice-of-Life, and into an overpowering battle manga. This season's 12 episodes were made only to establish the core Literature Club group by developing their characters through Slice-of-Life episodes. Episode 8 however, is the lone exception as it acts as the exposition dump to answer how the supernatural powers exist in this setting. Episode 8 also acts as an overall tease to hype up the possibility that a season two could be made surrounding the supernatural "Fairy Wars" that were hinted at several times throughout the season.
To sum up, Inou Battle Wa Nichijoukei No Naka De comes off more like a set-up season for bigger things rather than judging it as a one-off series. It did its job establishing the setting, and its core characters. However, it ends up feeling like it ended before anything truly got started.
Literature Good god, do something!
If you have superpowers as a core concept to your series, then maybe it would be a good idea to actually do something with it. Nobody watches an X-Men show/movie and thinks to themselves "Yeah I mean this conflict with Magneto is cool and all, but I really want to see how his love life is going."
The story centers around a group of high school students receiving superpowers through a mysterious flash of light, setting up a mystery that none of the characters bother looking into in the slightest. The group consists mainly of girls and one guy and the set up for whacky harem comedy antics is set-up, instead of... you know... superpowered action. They really just use their powers either just to dick around or screw Andou over in some way. It's a rather poor sign when Chuunibyou has more spectacular action going on.
That's the main crux of my issue, it's so boring and it takes a snails age for anything to actually happen between the characters. Scenarios are set up and dropped, new characters appear and drop off the face of the earth with only the vague possibility of making a reappearance. It sets up something potentially decent and does nothing. Can't even say it's all that good as slice-of-life or as a harem comedy. I don't find the humor all that funny except for rare instances and I could care less about the romance- Andou is even more of an inept dork than the standard harem comedy protagonist is, and all the girls are generally kinda shitty as people. Except Mirei- she's pretty cool, too bad she fades into the wallpaper.
Almost a shame such slick animation is wasted here. I won't be watching this show through to the end, but honestly if a show can't grip me by the episode 5/6 mark then it's rare for me to bother past then. Maybe it's my fault for going in with different expectations, but that wouldn't have happened if the show itself hadn't led me astray to start with.
Just... so... boring.
