If I was to sum this movie up in a word, it would be “solid”. The Outpost won’t become a classic of American cinema, or of war films, but it’s a solid entry in both.
The film is good at evoking time and place. Essentially, the first hour is an unglamorized portrait of soldiers embracing the increasing levels of suck, and the second is where the battle happens. Every part of what goes into a film—acting, dialogue, pacing, etc.—is done competently or well, and sum of its parts is more than worth a rental. It would have been worth it to see in theater.
The (few) hater reviews I’ve read focus on the constant profanity and alpha-male crassness of the cast, but it wasn’t anything outside from what I recall from Romesha’s book.
