This film is, for me, a deeply affecting mood piece that shares DNA with film noir, gothic fiction and surrealism. It beautifully captures beatnik Santa Monica in the 60s, and Dennis Hopper wears a cute Navy Outfit, and him and Linda Lawson struggle with their desires until inevitable misfortune strikes. Neither of them knows what they want, or if they know, they're terrified of it; it's heartbreaking.
Don't go in expecting a scary horror film. It's much more just sad. And incredible.
