Killer Joe – Trailer Trash Meets Potential Dumpmaster Dwellers
It’s rather easy to find quite laughable some of the rants about this tawdry, sensationalistic copycat trash. A director/co-writer that should have known better (William Friedkin) and a writer whose works mostly rely on simplistic vulgar sensationalism (Tracy Letts) – let alone a star (Mc Conaughey) who once said he’s grateful to God for guiding his career! (words that will come back to haunt him for sure). All have wholeheartedly over-indulged in this truly grotesque piece of refuge.
With a story peopled only by entirely despicable characters, and situations reminiscent of one’s very worst nightmares - the viewer is dragged from one sickening situation only to be bashed over the head by each one that depressingly follows (crass nudity, repugnant brutality, and endless gutter language are used without any vital purpose) Perhaps some vacuous arrested development sufferers might give this any more than a passing glance, and even they will then need to purge their brains of the contamination deposited within (as an alarming number have already attested!- among those, the longish but intelligent IM Db review by Ghost_Dog 86 halfway down P2 is worth a read)
This already low budget production could not even make back half of its costs, making everyone associated look rather foolish (how do they find producers so ready to be parted with their money?) Anyone considering being associated with the script would have seen the unrelenting ugliness building to its vomit-inducing finale. And while on the said ‘finale’ there is none, the screen goes black midway through the final wrap-up, leaving the audience floundering and even further distressed. This is the industry that wonders why so much of its product does not make money! Also, if looking for any publicized cruel black ‘humor’ forget it; it’s so moronic and sleazy as to be non-existent. Unless a masochist, stay away.
Makes one think new rating information might need to be supplied for these types of works; Contains Audience and Actor, Abuse. As expected, SBS TV World Movies chose to run the ludicrous restricted cut over the slightly more accepted release vers. Junk for Junkies.
