I know I’m supposed to bash this film for adaptational deviations and I did notice them but I don’t actually find that they ruined the movie or came even close to doing so.
To address critiques, Ludo Bagman not being in the movie is a nitpick. As entertaining as SPEW would have been it wasn’t essential to the plot, or even close. BCJ’s original plan actually working is something I’m fine with. In the book, Dumbledore’s aggression towards BCJ is what leads to Harry understanding how Dumbledore was the only wizard Voldemort ever feared. And if a detail as small as movie Dumbledore asking a question angrily which in the book he asked calmly were enough to ruin him for you then you were NEVER a fan of the character.
I don’t care that Fleur is no longer a Veela.
This movie actually has a lot to recommend for it. Including the humour of it, the fact that Moody is clearly enjoying himself demonstrating the dangerous forbidden technique.
And I like the humour of the film.
And I like how Ron was partly responsible for Harry being warned about the dragons. Another example that gives the lie to the claim that the movies did Ron dirty.
And I love how terrifying Ralph Fiennes is as Voldemort and how well the film sets the stage for Order of the Phoenix.
There were problems I had with the movie, like it never explaining how Harry knows the others know when he warns Cedric. BCS not being under the Imperius Curse and there being no explanation for how BCJ escapes Azkaban when it was an unachievable feat in the previous film (and book). And I know the book explains all that but the film doesn’t.
That said, all in all, I think that this movie was quite a good adaptation and that even when it deviated from the text of the source material there was a clear loyalty to the spirit of it.
Film Great movie
