Petunia sends six year old Harry to his cousin, Kushina, and he finds family and belonging in Kohona during the Third Shinobi war. Kushina and Minato's characters are especially well drawn and Harry's struggles with the language, different customs and learning jutsu are really interesting. This is a Harry that gets the family and acceptance he always wanted but tempered with the realities of war, making his character quite a bit different from the books. He's extremely quiet and thoughtful, but just as stubborn as canon!Harry and he clings to his precious people with a dogged determination that lets nothing deter him.
The fic also has plenty of action/adventure between war, Orochimaru, the Kyuubi and his Genin team so I didn't mind the lack of Hogwarts. The author does include some future snippets of Harry's time at Hogwarts, including some chakra versus magic moments as well as Harry's reaction to Snape. I'm definitely looking forward to a trained, experienced Shinobi!Harry eventually getting there.
If you enjoy Naruto/Harry Potter crossovers, this one is well worth your time.
FanficRecs One of my favorite fics
