Besides some fantastic and on spot characterization regarding chemistry between Byakuya's and Renji's characters, the way the author Junko expands on the already vast world of soul society is so encompassing and subtle it can be hard to tell at times when it is their fanon or canonical fact. I would recommend even non slash fans and shippers to read this series simply for the impressive characterization and exploration of the Bleach universe.
