FanficRecs Frick yeah this fanfic
This fic belongs in the upper echelons of the selection of fanfics from this series. It needs its own plaque up on Mount Olympus. The characters are handled really well. No one is perfect, and things seem to be more realistic than what's actually depicted in the series itself. From the beginning, the author puts in some changes that cause the story to be put in motion. Then Yuusaku almost becomes some sort of monstrous control-freak patriarch. This is actually really cool to see since in canon he's just the randomly appearing father whose troubles are above Shinichi's head and usually are just bickerings with Yukiko. This characterization definitely changes things but makes it better. On the other hand, I have a couple qualms about this. The shopping scene with Ran and Aoko is one, but only because it's a thing I think authors of DC fanfics do when they're exhausted for things that Ran likes doing. One last thing before talking about the end: I have to talk about how APTX is handled here. Hats off to Ai for trying to stop Shinichi from taking the temporary cure because it screwed everything up and it wasn't even necessary for him to use it. The timing of when the cure wears off is coincidental, just like in the show itself, which is pretty great because it salvages one of the cliches that happens within the canon series. Regarding the last chapter published, I am going to not complain about where it stops, because I'm pretty sure the author had valid reasons for dropping it. I wouldn't blame them, either. It's hard (for me) to even think about where to start in investigating the Black Org, since they're so vague about their inner workings and dealings in the show itself. In canon, it takes incredibly long to even get information about them, and it's usually by coincidence, or by them revealing themselves. There isn't much to go on from that. Overall this is definitely one of the best DC fanfictions out there and its age doesn't show considering that it sticks almost exclusively to the main cast, even excluding regular guest appearances like Heiji. I've read it multiple times because of how good of a story it is, how well the characters are shown, and especially that scene where Shinichi is pretty much caught having to explain himself to Ran. Shinichi's a jerk.
