FanficRecs Intelligent points but not really fun
Farla fanfics tend to be a thought out of a very dark version of the pokemon world. She seems to cover one idea before moving on.
They are very well written and bring up good points.
On those points alone they may very well worth looking into.
But and I'm having a hard time figuring out how to phrase this: The fics leave a bad taste after reading them; As if they're written as something bad natured or as if bash fic.
There's a lot 'and remember /you're/ doing horrible things to these creatures' which while factually true enough is not how the original series/games played it. In the anime they're careful in many cases to show it instead as the limitations of the games as opposed to how it's meant to be taken. It feels like being told to stop having fun.
For instance she has a series of fics about trainers talking about the protagonist not caring about their pokemon; a point which has a lot of truth as the game system doesn't support real self sacrifice and friendship well, but many players like to pretend that they actually are doing those things - they might not actually be able to live out that real friendship but they do as much as they can - and filling in the blanks when games are limited is old school for video gamers, to video gamers you only have to assume your character is not doing things if the system allows to to do them and you do or the world as presented wouldn't.
Also her author's notes are creepy. She'll comment on how x things from the game or the anime is abuse and when it's the game go on to explain that she does it to and that she really likes the games, it's just that this is the way things go down. Does she enjoy thinking she abusing animals? Admittedly that probably isn't what a read is supposed to take from it.
She brings up a lot of good points and from a very different angle from most of the fandom so she can be well worth reading; just there's something misanthropic about her works that leaves them hollow.
FanficRecs Ech
I find the stories I have read to be rather bland, and to be frank, the protagonists of said stories lack... depth. At least for the ones I've read, and if it is indeed the same Farla that I've read from, I've found it nigh-impossible to sympathize with her characters. I know TV Tropes isn't exactly reputed for our fanfiction recommendations, but I would like to single this for the hopefully-inevitable cleaning out.
But then, there doesn't seem to be many Pokemon fics which are against using Pokemon the way they are shown to be used in-game.
