There's a gem there; you just need to dig it out.
Honestly, I wasn't sure what to make of this show at first, but it turned to out be be a pretty darn good series that holds to Gundam standards by the end. ...The only problem is that it takes about 18-20 episodes to get there. Now, I can understand why the first half of the series was like it was; Zeta Gundam got incredibly depressing by the end, so it makes sense that they'd try to balance things out with some levity. The problem is that much of the humor just doesn't really work, nor does it gel with the UC timeline. (Now, if this was G Gundam...) That said, I can't say it doesn't have it's place; while the show never quite reaches Zeta levels of bleakness, it almost gets up there by the end, and it almost makes you long for the happier, silly moments of the first half. (It really hits you when you see what's become of Mashmyre...) Does it rank among the best Gundam shows? Not quite, but it's still pretty good, and I don't regret watching it. :)
