Is it that bad?

I mean, yes, it is depressing, that's what Dark Souls is. But the fact is that things change. Empires fall. Fires burn out. We saw what happened when the Witch tried to recreate the First Flame. The Age of Light should have ended long ago. But it didn't and the world paid for it. This is the end of the beginning, not the end period.

The actions of the characters were never going to mean anything in the end. But that doesn't mean they were fruitless. The characters did their part in their time. That is what is important, not the overall end result hundreds or thousands of years later.

Of course it is. Age of Fire (not Light) created humanity as we know it and made it something more than a bunch of zombie husks. Gwyn, Witches of Izalith, Pigmy, even Nito — they all took from the Flame and became something better, clearing out the Dragons to build their own civilization. Humans themselves owe much to the Flame, what with Humanity being Dark Soul and all.

And, ya'know, it is very easy to say that Age of Fire should have ended when it's not your world that will be destroyed after the ending.
