Would the Harper song 'verses' that Anne Mc Caffrey put at the beginning of the chapters of some of her Dragonriders/Pern books qualify for this trope?

The page says "They are not part of the text proper"... but that definition would exclude The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which is quoted extensively in-text, not just in epigraphs, and plays an increasingly important role in the plot as the story goes on.
