Just to add to what ccoa said - you can practically imagine him, without the clown make-up, getting ready to discuss something with another individual almost as if he\'s in a noir production. He\'s smoking, under being the focus of the light, and you\'d not need much to change it to a still from a archetypal noir scene. As is though, it becomes silly due to the clown-make up, hence providing bathos.
