I question the entry about Jacob trying to make goats spotted or striped by laying branches in front of them in hopes that they will acquire the coats colored like the branches.

If you read the entire section, you see that he was putting the peeled (so any spots or stripes on the bark would be gone anyway) branches out at the water trough only when spotted or striped goats came to drink, and the prevailing theory was that he was encouraging goats to mate when spotted or striped goats were among them in hopes that this would result in more spotted or striped offspring.

Which is less a matter of magic and more a matter of elementary genetics.

The implied-supernatural part is that God favored him by having the markings come out as stripes when his father-in-law reneged and said \
