IMO, this fits under CharacterRerailment since this was the way Goku was always supposed to be portrayed according to Toriyama and and it was his portrayal in the manga. It was the anime of ''Dragon Ball Z'' that made him heroic, so the anime originally did {{Flanderization}} on Goku's heroic qualities.
