No real-life/ sports examples? I'm thinking of that one World Cup match in 2014 where halfway through, the score was about 0-8, and it ended up being like 1-12... which feels slightly more pathetic than if it were 0-12. When it's 0-12, you want to laugh, but when it's 1-12, you want to give them a pat on the head.
