Even disregerding the fact ZUN's art isn't good enough to distinguish age, the real problem is that different artists worked on the print works over the years. Since every artist has their own style, and they are usually used for only one book, it makes it really hard to see the growth of the characters. Just compare Azuma Aya and Harukawa Moe - Azuma's art is much rounder and softer, making the characters look younger than Harukawa's straight, sharp lines.

There's subtle differences. I turn 32 this fall and I've noticed some small differences between now and when I was 21.

Even then subtle, people routinely tell me I don't look 32 and that I'm like 26, 27.

So maybe Reimu and Marisa just age really well?

Asians tend to look younger than westerners. Probably has something to do with softer face shapes and a different skin type that hardly show wrinkles.

I'm 22 and people seem to have wildly different guesses on my age. Range has gone from 'still in high school' to 'have married'. Maybe being born relatively late in my mother's life have confused people.

For something only tangentially related, I've seen an improbable but amusing theory that Eternity Larva will come back in the extra stage as Eternity Imago.

and here I thought that my imagination conjuring the image of Eternity Larva somehow becoming the final boss is too farfetched.

That seems doubtful, given that her design is explicitly meant to represent all three stages at once. It'd be odd for her to change given that she's already all of them.

Might be a matter of emphasis.

Or maybe she's all three in the trinity sense, and your first fight was basically like having a danmaku match with Jesus. NOW YOU FACE GOD.

I did say it was improbable. Maybe she can swap the design aspects around instead, so proboscis mouth, caterpillar legs and cocoon armor.
