So Durazno and Bocaj are Benben and Yatsuhasi, and Fawriel is Raiko?
I am super-okay with that.
OKAY NOW I'M LEAVING THOUGH BYE Y'ALL
Guys, I already called the Stage 2 boss spot. Get your own level.
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru! If Benben and Yatsuhashi were two levels below, sure. And also if most of the EX-stage boss fight were with the two of them instead of some of it.
I kind of noticed a pattern in...several of the games' latter halves, namely level 4 has a boss that changes depending on your character, level 5 has a boss with a gimmick, and then level 6 is the final boss. The first Windows trilogy had this pattern, and quite recently DDC. Excluding 9, that's pretty much half of the games.
(SA did have a changing level 4 boss, but did Orin have a gimmick? Aside from being really really difficult, I mean.)
Oh geez...uhhh...hmm...

Eh, for some reason Mangafox says Forbidden Scrollery is licensed. I didn't know it was licensed in the US.
Everything is relative.Yeah, many people have also noticed that pattern. The pattern was there for the first Windows trilogy, got dropped in the Religion arc, and then brought back in DDC (which is supposed to be a call back to old-school?). The only exception is Satori.
Orin had the gimmick of being a Flunky Boss.
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru!Eh, having flunkies isn't much of a gimmick. Like, Meiling had flunkies sometimes!
...And Alice.
...Keine had those orb things too, come to think of it...
...wait a minute.
Meiling had fairy support for a single nonspell, Alice's dolls are normally just spawn points, and Keine used the same familiar system as everyone in her game. Orin stands out for using flunkies frequently
The difference with the Windows trilogy is that they screw with the player's control or bullet behavior. Sakuya stops time, during which both the bullets and the player can't move. Youmu slows down time. Reisen makes bullet invisible/intangible. Seija flips the screen, and consequently bullet direction and player control.
You can argue Orin's gimmick is her zombie fairies, Shou's is curvy lazors, while Sanae...she draws stars, and Futo...uses a lot of arrows. But as far as game mechanic is concerned, they're just normal bullets.

Rin's gimmick wasn't the flunkies themselves, it was the fact that they revived and kept coming at you. Less of a gimmick than others in the series, certainly, but I think it counts. Not a coincidence that she's in the same game as Satori. Satori just auto-filled as the recommended word on my phone.
, , Ah, okay then.
I have to say, I always found Sakuya's gimmick rather underwhelming. While her patterns are interesting enough, that's because of the odd, uncomfortable angles you're forced to dodge from, not the timestops. If the timestops were completely removed I don't think the spellcards would meaningfully change
The time stops give you a bit of time to think about it. They make it easier which gave ZUN room to make the patterns themselves harder. The exact same thing applies to Youmu. Seija is the opposite in that her patterns are stupid simple and easy to make up for the disruptive gimmick. ZUN was also auto-completed.
I never got much value from the timestop. At most it reduces the surprise factor
Orin's gimmick is that she fights you five times in one game, or that she's the midboss of three consecutive stages, but the gimmick for the stage 5 boss fight would probably be the zombie faries.
That's important though. If the knives just came suddenly out of nowhere then it would be harder and require better reaction times.
Reisen has the only gimmick that fundamentally alters her cards. All the others just make them a bit easier or harder. Auto-complete wanted Reisen to be Reimu.

But does Reisen herself want to be Reimu?
You'd be surprised at the answer.

Maybe, depending on who you choose as a player character, the level 2 boss is either Durazno or Bocaj, with the other as the midboss, then you (Fawriel) will appear as part of a trio boss with the both of them?
A bit unconventional, I know, but hey, compromise!
Or maybe one of you will be the second player character, I dunno.
