I did Arcade mode twice, and I got Yukari-Suika both times. But I played as Sakuya both times (I want Sakuya's World back dammit)
So yeah, I think it is player chosen (though that means the majority of the cast gets Yukari-Suika. Whateves)
Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.No, it's random. You just had a 1 in 9 chance happen
No, it's 1 in 3. The first instance was already pre-determined because it happened before the comment was made.
So I played the Comiket demo of Touhoumon Not-a-ROM-hack-this-time Version. Unlike the previous games which left you in Pokemon-land but inexplicably replaced all the Mons with Touhou characters, this time around you're someone from the Outside World who gets pulled into Gensokyo while visiting the newly discovered Hakurei Shrine Ruins (Renko and Maribel make a cameo in the beginning so I guess you're from the future too?). And once inside there's some weird new incident going on where Touhou character puppets are running around everywhere. I guess the simple explanation is that all the characters show up as both trainers and mons. And yes, everyone uses themselves.
Anyway, apparently you can't leave because of the incident, so the protagonists tell you to sit tight in the Human Village while they handle important things. And while you're at it you might as well become a Pokemon master or whatever. And... that's the end of the demo. You travel from the Shrine to the Village and fight Team 9 at the end (oddly enough led by Rumia). Keine and Kosuzu make cameo appearances in town, but they don't let you leave because it's too dangerous.
Combat is a slightly modified Pokemon, as you'd expect. Instead of physical and special attacks, you have focus and spread attacks, but mostly that's just confusing because it's not really intuitive which is which. You also don't learn skills automatically on leveling, you have to spend PP (so far you get 2 for every mon defeated, regardless of level) to buy them, and they're merely unlocked by level. So I guess the move tutor is obsolete because you can just buy any skill from your list at any time. Every single mon starts with the same two moves: a basic Dream type attack (either Yin Attack or Yang Attack, corresponding to Focus and Spread) and Focus Defense Up. It's implied that you can change passive abilities like this too, although that didn't happen in the demo since max level was 20.
Er... everyone on your team gets full experience from every battle, as long as they're still alive. It's a bit relaxing, but also makes suicide charges cost more because experience is only awarded after the entire battle, instead of after each mon is defeated. Trainers don't drop money anymore, instead you get sellable items from defeating any mon. You start with a portable game console that you brought from the outside world, which sells for a decent chunk of starting cash.
You catch mons by using seals on them. While you might think this is exactly like a Pokeball, it's not for some reason. You have to use a seal on them, and then kill them while they're afflicted by the Seal effect. This seems really cool at first since you don't have to do the "injure but not kill" nonsense and can capture with a one-hit kill from a super-unit, but they also have a random chance of failure in applying the effect for no reason whatsoever. And if the effect wears off you have to use it again.
Most importantly, Types have been completely revamped (again) and it's very confusing and sometimes seems a bit arbitrary. Seija is Poison, Kyouko is Sound, Alice is Steel/Light for whatever reason. Reisen is Illusion, Reimu is Nothing/Dream. Nothing is a funny Type to exist.

Oh yeah, I forgot the important part: you can also spend PP to freely raise your base stats in a way corresponding to and replacing EVs.
If Reimu didn't have a second type there would have been a callous joke to make there.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersInteresting! Thanks for the info, Clarste.
Pokémon-Touhou Type Discussions do occur quite often in the thread; agreements are rarely reached ^^. But this new game seems to at least provide a semi-"canon" option for it. I'd be interested if you could maybe list what types exist, Clarste.
Well, that fits. Should be Steel, too, because Power of METAL!
??? Well, oooookkkkk, not a fan of that...
Sounds good, too.
Is it like Normal?
Oh yeah! Forgot, that too. And they need a Dragon type that they can beat.

Is there Fairy? Cause Fairy is an actual thing now.
Heart of StoneYeah...
Seems like types need to go back to Pokemon ones, they just make more sense.
Or the new ones are completely arbitrarily added, whichever.
A lot of pokemon types would see very little use in Touhou unless you added them to characters arbitrarily
Like Sound and Nothing are going to be used for more than one character.
Yes, Normal would be used a lot, but it's less arbitrary than those two are.
Psychic/Normal with Levitate as an ability?

Some are easy. Cirno cannot be anything other than Ice/Fairy, Satori probably qualifies as Psychic, Yuyuko is an easy Ghost, Seija fits into the aesthetic of the Dark type, Waggysaggy is Water, Yuuka is Grass, Wriggle is Bug, Mokou is Fire, Medicine is Poison...
Others are not. Where the hell would you put Sanae?
Heart of StoneYeah, I agree. New ones are the way to go.
Sound: Kyoukers and Mystia. Prismrivers + Tsuko Band. That's pretty good. Nothing: that is kinda weird, we'd need confirmation from Clarste on who has it. I'd guess it's "human".
Completely random Hylarn, but: you had a pretty awesome-looking Parsee avatar there for a day...but you had no picdump with her in it. Could you link her, please?

Sanae... hmm, maybe Flying/Ground. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but hey, it's a miracle!
I stand corrected on Sound.
Yuuka will probably be Grass/Dream, Yukari will probably be Illusion/Dream, Sakuya will probably be Nothing/Illusion...
Marisa is definitely Normal.
Check out my fanfiction!I assume it was in a picdump. I got kind of tired of that Aya avatar, so I'm on random rotation until I get something new or 9/1, which ever comes first
Meiling would be Fighting, Yamame's Bug/Poison, Komachi's Ghost, Sanae's... Psychic with Levitate as her ability?
No, actually There hasn't been one for several days, and it wasn't in the last one.
Yeah, you see? Works very well.

...My file properties tell me I made that avatar on 12/22/10. Look for something from around then
Can't tell because I never caught one. Cirno and Diayousei were vulnerable to Steel though. Ice is probably not a type because Cirno was casting Waterball on me.
Umm... since everyone seems to care so much, here's a full list of all the catchable puppets I found:
- Reimu: Nothing/Dream
- Nitori: Water/Steel
- Seija: Poison
- Kyouko: Sound
- Reisen: Illusion
- Alice: Light/Steel
- Patchouli: Nothing
- Nazrin: Earth/Steel
- Rin: Fire
- Kana: Ghost(?)/Sound (I didn't actually look up the kanji so maybe it's not ghost, but the "ghost" move she has does the haunt status effect)
- Aya: Wind
In addition to those types, I've confirmed the existence of Darkness, Nature, and Fighting(?) through movesets. Darkness seems to be more literally Darkness like Rumia and a skill called "Bad Moon" that Reisen and Seija have. Nature replaces grass like it did in 1.8, and may be used for fairies like it was there too. I didn't look up the kanji they used for fighting, but the animation was a flurry of fists.
For what it's worth, Light is mostly Lasers.
I suppose it also important to remember that these are all first-evolutions and typing may change at higher tiers. If evolutions exist anyway. There was a prominent "normal" listed in various places, so I wonder if evolutions follow an Easy Normal Hard Lunatic progression.

Oh! Now I understand, it's an old one! Sorry, I misunderstood you. I thought you always put on one from the latest picdump, and that therefore, the Parsee must have been from yesterday or something. Everything clear now. Sorry for the bother.
Excellent! Thanks for the info. That's a lot of types!
Loving the Steel for Nitori; if we take "Steel" as general "uses equipment and machines", then Alice makes more sense! ...oh, also Nazrin. Yeah, she has equipment, too, so that should confirm it. Liking the idea; the name "Steel", not so much. Misleading.
Also, Kana, wow, there's an obscure one; but! Another one for Sound! Nice.
...Nothing for Patchy...? Erh. Weeeeird. So, not "human"...? But, also, not "Magic" either, since Reimu also has it.
I find this really fascinating, but gotta sleep now. Probably gonna miss some interesting discussion.

Most of that seems reasonable, though I'm still at a loss for what Nothing is supposed to be. What's the kanji for it?
Worth noting that Ghost/Sound is the best type for a poltergeist, since I'm pretty sure it means noisy ghost.
Heart of Stone
The final two bosses of Arcade Mode changes randomly (based on character chosen? not sure). It's either Yukari-Suika, Iku-Tenshi, or Utsuho-Suwako, iirc. Basically, it chooses between IaMP, SWR and Soku.
