Obviously the AWA convention was so much of a wake up call to what Touhou is and has become that it has awoken a great curiosity among other things. (For one ZUN using You Tube 10 years ago would have been unthinkable.)

Between this and Marisa 'fleeing' at the beginning, My guess was that the plotline would revolve around some sort of subconsciously spooky thing or something. Kinda like HM.

Marisa just didn't want to get caught in the act. She fled pragmatically as a thief, not as a coward. Kosuzu seemed to be more scared when she wasn't looking at them. Face to face she didn't mind so much, although she can be startled of course.

Also: chapter 16, in which something something.

Fear of the unknown. What you see is more known than what you don't.

Kosuzu is starting to see Youkai energy. Uh-oh...

Oh hey, a vengeful spirit. That's a first for Touhou.

No, we've seen them before. Kasen crushed a few during the early chapters of WAHH and I'm pretty sure the ghosts surrounding Orin are vengeful spirits. And they talk about them endlessly in SOPM.

Also I'm not sure that's the interesting part about Kosuzu's revelation... she could always feel "pins and needles" from it (and Reimu can sense it too in the same chapter), but now it's telling her things. Her power is evolving, she's becoming a youkai, etc etc.

Also if this was any other series I'd swear that was Ship Tease with Akyuu

Hopefully Kosuzu won't become an abomination when she turns into a Youkai.

All cases of humans becoming youkai we know of have minimal cosmetic effects

And the actual abomination still looks like a normal person

Most of the abominations look like normal people.

Yeah, guess ZUN can't really deviate the formula at this point.

Oh hey, maybe this will lead to a playable Kosuzu in a future game. That'd be neat.

Or as a boss, whichever comes first. Usually it's boss first, playable character second.

Speaking of which, I was initially (back when I was just looking at the series as a bunch of bullet hell games) actually kind of shocked that a lot of people liked these characters. Because, you know, being on the receiving end of a bullet hell bosses' barrage would warrant a lot of frustration.

Then again, I guess it's easier to notice considering you don't need to play the game to learn about these characters so...

At the rate we're going, Kosuzu could conceivably be a boss in 15 or 16

Playable (without being a boss first)... I have no idea. There's no precedent for side material characters becoming playable, but there haven't been any where it'd be reasonable

Though, I'm more interested in what her entry in the Gensoukyou Chronicles will look like

It has a lot to do with all of the characters having comfy personalities, I guess.

I think we have to come to terms with the fact that these manga never actually go anywhere despite constantly teasing things.

Man, I really LOVE LOVE LOVE it whenever our well-known characters get to play different people (in all franchises, not just Touhou). So these "Myouren Crew reenacting old tales"-segments are soooo awesome to me! I'd read a whole manga just about that.

Wow, dat Unzan! Has a snazzy Fu Manchu moustache now instead of his usual Santa Beard getup... also human-sized, both firsts, I think . But hey, shapeshifter, so gotta try new stuff from time to time.

The panel with Marisa standing opposite two ladies who are dressed in gorgeously ornate period dresses... makes Marisa look kinda goofy ^^. But we love her for it <3.

Three Fairies cameo! And they're super tiny!

I really think Reimu has got to have another passive hax ability that makes her completely ignore cold . Marisa's dressed more warmly than her, but she's the one sneezing in the cold night while old detached-sleeves-Reimu is completely fine.

The name is puntastic. It can be both understood as the kanji "収集荷取" Shuushuu Nitori - "Collect & Carry", and as the English "Shoot Shoot Nitori".

If Kosuzu did become a youkai, is there a given species of ex-humans in the Japanese mythology? Does she become one of the class-species, a "librarian youkai" like how Alice and Patchouli are magicians? Something that her power would have been hinting at, like if a telepathic character could become a satori?

We have at least one other human who turned into a youkai without magicianing it up: Ichirin.
