I guess the PC-98 characters are canon but on thing still bothers me, is Yuuka and Alice that we in LLS and MS respectively? Are Reimu and Marisa even the same characters?

Well, EOSD says Reimu's the same one ("as the last game"). And I'm pretty sure ZU Ns mentioned elsewhere that Alice as well is the same one. Other than that I'm not sure.

I thought all of Touhou should be considered demi-canon until ZUN stops making material, after which it becomes complete fanon.

The ZU Niverse has a unique cosmology that should not be compared - or worse, conflated - with that of any other work of fiction or mythology (religious or otherwise) in history.

^^ Unique as in uniquely confusing due to age gap and considerable amount of retcon? Then that sounds quite like Marvel universe...though, consider that ZUN didn't try to actually do real worldbuild until like several games in...

Both comparison and conflation result in efforts to shoehorn a fictional universe into rulesets it was not (at least initially) meant to follow and leads to anticipation that future Word of God will play out a certain way vis a vis how stuff works. We don't know what goes on in ZUN's head and I don't think it's productive to guess too hard at it until he gets it out.

ZUN's world is malleable compared to other fantasy worlds where they are largely consistent in their world building. There is also the shrug of god tendencies of ZUN....

^ IMO because 1: ZUN add in mainly characters only and 2: Didn't trying to actually make a believable and stable society other than some handwaving...but that may be just me...

Touhou is more character driven than story driven compared to some other stories so I guess his world being malleable is justified.

The impression I get is that ZUN mostly writes the games' stories as inspiration for the gameplay, and worries about how it fits with everything else later

Yaaaay ZUN News! (Really hope they're all accurate! ^^) Man, so much awesome stuff, but everyone pretty much already said everything I would have said, so I won't go down the list or anything. But all super interesting! Seems like things are goin' well over there, and ZUN seems to be enjoying himself too and opening up to the west! Awesome.

Well, glad to see that Rin Satsuki thing was cleared up at least. Still crossing my fingers that she'll show up eventually, but not holding my breath.

The Mima answer doesn't surprise me, but I'm glad it was asked and glad it wasn't outright denied. I still don't really think she'll be showing up any time soon, but I remain hopeful.
