Isn't it obvious that a ghost would have a tragic death? Mokou's past is semi-dramatic too, if you think about it. Cursed to live forever and isolated from humanity by her immortality for thousands of years blah blah blah. Flandre was locked in a basement for 495 years. Even someone like Sakuya is strongly implied to have dark secrets in her past. There's lots of room for drama in Touhou, though most of its in the backstory. In the present everyone's pretty much overcome all their problems and Gensokyo is a paradise etc etc.

Ayuh, danmaku and tea-time.
Well, that's outside of Concealed the Conclusion, anyway...
My troper wall's now my troper page, yay!I love how even Koumajou Densetsu Scarlet Symphony winds up going down the "silly" path despite the Darker and Edgier character artwork.
Well, I still say that Touhou doesn't really take itself all that seriously. And there is surely such a thing as too much drama.
And Charlatan'd. Yes Mr. Charlie, that's quite amusing to me as well.

The games are entirely light-hearted? IN and UFO's EX stages mostly consist of the EX boss angsting. And UFO's story in general is kind of depressing.
I never said that it was entirely light-hearted, just that it didn't take itself too seriously.

Touhou tends to have a bit of a cycle when it comes to the Sliding Scale of Silliness vs. Seriousness - if we have a game or two with a relatively serious story, ZUN will work on some that's a bit more light-hearted to serve as a little relief, and once that's done, he can do a bit more serious story, and so on and so forth.

WHO IS THIS LOSER*suddenly materializes in the middle of the discussion with an enormous bedhead*
...
That doujin was not the right thing to read before going to bed.
Someone! Throw me suggestions for a non-rape way Suwako became the predecessor to a line of humans! I'll make my own version to replace this one...
Geez, I am starting to take this stuff a little too seriously, am I not.
Some sort of variation on the frog princess story?
After Kanako, I think the most popular pairing for Suwako is her hat.
I'M DRUNK.
What? No! He's far too flippant for her! And he's with Parsee!
... Wait, Frog Princess? Tell me more...
You know, the old story about a princess cursed into the form of a frog and she has to wait for the prince to realize her inner beauty and break the curse by kissing the frog, which is presumably ugly. It's sort of one of the classic fairy tales, parodied more often than it's told straight. Obviously Suwako wouldn't be cursed into that form (probably?) but it seems like a solid base to write a frog-god/mortal romance from.
Ninja'd. I guess I made up some details that didn't exist.

I figured out a good way to make use of the Frog Princess tale for this... The story starts off as per usual, with a young prince or farm boy or whatever who has to find a bride, and ends up finding a frog who magically talks to him and claims to be a cursed princess. The frog, however, is actually just a normal frog, and the one talking and using magic to fulfill the tasks is Suwako behind the curtains playing a trick on the boy for fun. However, he begins to sincerely enjoy the frog's company and is willing to look past its exterior and believe what it says, and in the end, even kisses it to lift the curse... only for nothing to happen. However, Suwako can't help feeling sympathy for the earnest boy and decides to reveal herself.
Smoochies ensue.
Sparky, write that. Now.
Another Kogasa fan? What a pleasant surprise~
I like to imagine it was a nice guy who was trying to console her after her defeat at Kanako's hands. Reassuring hug turns into something more in the rain.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!Karakasa have been one of my favorite youkai ever since playing Super Mario World 2: Six Golden Coins on my gameboy as a kid and goin okay seriously wtf it that. LIVING UMBRELLA. I also really dig Kogasa's cheery attitude and solitary nature, seeing as how those are both traits that I myself possess.
And speaking of cool creatures from Japanese mythology, I think there oughta be a nurikabe-girl in the next game >_>
