Practice makes perfect.

[up][up] scythe ain't exactly a useful weapon type either, though Marluxia's is curved a lot less than standard.

Scythes are not and have never been actual weapons. That is not what they were designed for.

I hesitate to say "never". I'm sure someone's used one as a weapon, successfully or not.

But the whole reason we associate it with death is because of the grim reaper imagery. Reaper as in harvesting the crop, scythes being garden tools for that purpose.

Pencils can be and have been used as weapons but that doesn't mean that's what they're meant for.

Same with scythes.

I mean, people have been hit over the head with guitars before. I dunno about sitars. Or what the difference is. I read the wikipedia article on Sitars and it was all just words.

I was aiming at the "never have been actual weapons", rather than the "not what they were designed for". Just about anything can be a weapon if it's used that way.

Pedantry, I know.

And really, what "sucks" so much about being a Nobody?

IIRC it is mentioned several times throughout KH 2 that nobodies feel a certain emptiness/longing for something. That still sounds like a decent trade-off for all the superpowers to me though.

What Marluxia has isn't a really scythe like it's usually the case when "scythes" are used at weapons. An actuall scythe is made to efficiently cut things on the ground without ruining your back. When scythes were used as weapons, it was rather their blades being reforged because peasant armies weren't exactly swimming in money.

If one could just grab a thing from a farm to use as a weapon, there were better tools.

[up]Interstellar dust can be used as a weapon, you just have to throw your enemy against it with relativistic speed.

I was thinking about the flail, being used two-handed like many pseudo-scythes, but those work too.

But the whole reason we associate it with death is because of the grim reaper imagery. Reaper as in harvesting the crop, scythes being garden tools for that purpose.

Exactly that. Death doesn't need a weapon, it takes countless lifes with a single swing and just couldn't care less.

When the Grim Reaper uses a sword to take nobles, that's a sign of respect because beheading was seen as one of the more humane methods of execution.

I was reacting to the "At least you got an actual weapon" thing. I would think an "actual" weapon would be one that was designed for the purpose of being a weapon and/or was actually useful at that purpose and a Scythe is neither of those things.

Hell, a Sitar might be more useful because you could at least hit someone over the head with it. With a scythe, especially one like Marluxia and the traditional image of Death have, you are far more likely to cut yourself than anything around you. Especially if you swing it around.

When scythes have been used as weapons it's tended to involve taking the blade off and reattaching it so that it basically becomes a spear or a halberd.

I'm pretty sure scythes are different from sickles, and.

Read Reaper Man.

My bet is on the sitar. Has more impact than the scythe and possibly better handling. You might even take out the strings and use them to strangle someone.

The worst you can do with a scythe is poke someone in the eye, and that requires them to not defend themselves at all.

So I guess we can all agree that Demyx should knock out Marluxia with a good swing to the head.

But isn't that problem solved once you inevitably grow a new heart? Leaving you with all your Nobody powers and none of the downsides?

I guess so. I don't remember clearly if Xemnas said that he knew about the regrowing hearts during KH 2 or if it dropped into his subconsciouness after returning into the past.

That really lessens the villany of the organization turning people into Heartless/Nobodies. It's really just an inconvenience that unlocks any potential.

To be fair, it's probably no fun if you become a non-humanoid Nobody. Hence the terror about being turned into a Dusk.

Provided you turn into a Nobody in the first place. Not everyone does. The majority of random Joes just get eaten, their body and soul vanishing, and hopefully get reincarnated after Sora releases their heart.

Edit: actually, I don't know if reincarnation is a thing. Could be that your heart just becomes part of Kingdom Hearts forever.

When they set out to get new members(did that actually happen with anyone but the beast?), they mentioned they were targeting people who would become strong nobodies. I kinda assumed they ment sentient ones, since that's a pretty usefull thing to have when going on missions. Obviously they never gave a damn about colleteral damage.

[up]So regular afterlife then? Those three nameless guys in Traverse Town are really screwed.

Typically if you get Heartless'd your body just goes into limbo. If you have a particularly strong heart, congratulations! You now have the privilege of your body becoming a twisted, shambling inhuman monster. You gotta be the cream of the crop to become an Organization-tier Nobody. Seems a rough gamble.

And I think the Swiss (?) army at one point used modified scythes as weapons, though by that point they're just glaives by any other name. And farming implements as weapons have precedent, seeing as that's what nunchaku and tonfa originally were. (And I don't know about you, but I'd be warier of a guy with a big sharp blade on a stick than a sitar. I'd be too busy trying to avoid getting the point embedded on my skull to argue about how impractical it was.)

Can non-humanoid Nobodies not regrow their hearts? Why not? We know they're sentient, capable of speech, and of thinking and planning. Why would they not be capable of forming a new heart? Is being pretty a condition for having a heart?

Anyway, even with all that said, turning into a Heartless may not be great, but if you do turn out to be a humanoid Nobody, you've absolutely nothing to complain about.

[up][up]Sadly, being extraordinary is the standard for this series.

War Scythes or Storm Scythes are something completly different from the farming tool or the things you see in media. They have straight shafts and stronger blades mounted portruding from the shaft so that you can actually get proper edge alingment on your strikes. Those are actual weapons.

The more iconic weapon can't do much at all and the farming tool can cut your ankles at most, if your close enough to kiss your opponent. To hit the head with the point you have to make a wide, awkward swing with a wide step. During the huge wind-up, your opponent will just kick you in the balls.

Okay, new Heartless boss idea. Basically it's this big dome thing that covers a large part of the arena (a flat plain would be preferable) that you have to fly around and damage certain areas that would be weakpoints. This boss would spawn enemies, and both they and the dome would utilize, let's say, Thunder magic.

Now, what would a good name for this boss be?

Are we sure being a Nobody grants you special powers? Braig and Lea seem to have their powers even when they're normal people and Roxas and Xemnas inherited their powers from Sora and Xehanort. The Organization members might just be a group of Nobodies made from people with supernatural powers.
