...you are fluent in Thai? Let me ask...what is a good way to start learning the language? I want to reach fluency in it as I am a Thai Buddhist who...doesn't know any Thai. At all. Which makes conversation with the Bhikkhu, Mae Ji, and some temple goers a bit difficult...To say the least.

That and services take place entirely in Thai...They often have powerpoints with English, but I can tell I am missing a lot. Especially when people start laughing...

I have the Benjawan Poosman Becker books and they're pretty helpful, but I feel that the first book goes too fast for beginners. However, they're pretty much the only good written resource I've found. My wat (I'm Buddhist too) has Thai classes where you could go to learn Thai, so maybe your wat has one too? I know that the classes definitely helped with reading and I can read most magazine articles (except for the magazine covers with the "fancy" Thai). I don't think it'd hurt to ask around your temple for someone to help you with Thai. If your parents speak Thai, you can ask them to help since that's what my parents did.

Here's a link to the alphabet so that you can learn it but be warned, there's a lot of caveats to learning the alphabet, such as remembering the consonant class and what each tone marker does with each class: http://www.omniglot.com/writing/thai.htm

If you get Becker's book, that will help in writing/remembering the letters. Also, use Anki in order to memorize anything you need to, such as tones, letters, consonant class, vocab, etc. Thai grammar isn't exactly hard, but it can get kind of confusing at points for an English speaker (though other times, it's really easy). I'm not sure; I only learned Thai grammar through my parents, not by reading :P.

I find speaking easier because even though one might get the tone wrong, you still have context (though things like ไม่ไหม้/ไหม้ไหม้ (isn't burnt/very burnt) still happen) to help. Written Thai has this lack of space between words so sometimes, words blend together and that's one of the most annoying things, especially if there's a whole row of words I don't understand. Reading's definitely not my strong point, but I can get the gist of most texts.

Still, Thai's only really hard at the beginning. It has an alphabet-like script and a pretty easy phonology, though the tones throw most people off. If you want to learn Thai with a lot of exercises, the Foreign Service Institute has a free Thai course (http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php?page=Thai) but the audio's not that good imo. It's great if you want a concrete foundation in grammar but I recommend finding a lot of different sources in audio, like asking people at wat how a word is pronounced.

I see...Thank you! I have been meaning to ask some of the people at the wat I go to. I haven't had a chance to go recently though and hey I ran into a fluent speaker here so may as well ask another person too!

I know one woman who used to go regularly that teaches a Thai class, but I haven't seen her as of late and lack any form of contact info...I could probably pester some of the others for it though maybe.

Also despite being a Thai Buddhist I myself am not Thai...I AM WHITE. AND MEXICAN.
