There were over 100 powersets at the games closure, but the ways you could combine those was much more limited.

There were 14 Archetypes, but a lot of them were technically mirrors of each other.

If everyone were normal, the world would be a dull place. Like reality television.

[up]Pretty much, you also had the special archetypes you unlocked when reaching level 50 on both Hero and Villain factions. Warshade (pretty much a dark-energy alien) and Peacebringer (light-energy alien) were the Hero's special archetypes and Villains got Arachnos Soldiers (the eight spider limb soldiers to be specific) and Arachnos Widows (psionic blasters).

I think the only Archetype that didn't have a mirror was Mastermind....oh boy do I have fond memories of that archetype. Necromancer/Poison was my thing back in the day.....

I used Robotics/Traps Mastermind. Most hands off experience in a game that I've ever enjoyed.

Although, only the Tanker vs Brute and Scrapper vs Stalker were (mostly) perfect mirrors. Corrupters were too aggressive to mirror defenders, but didn't have as many offensive options as a blaster. Dominators seemed to be an odd mix of Controller and Blaster.

The closest you get is probably Gravity Control. Or Mission Architect.

[up]The Controller hero archetype had a Illusionary powerset too that would fit this appearance. There was also the Sound Corrupter powers....

I left the game before Mission Architect came out. I honestly really regret that I would love to get my hands on it now and create a story out of it....

The Gravity Control set's final power is called "Singularity", although it was simply a Gravity-themed pet like most of the final powers of control sets were.

Details from Paragon Wiki:

You can create a very powerful Gravitational Singularity. The Singularity will engage your foes, assaulting them with various gravity powers. Any foes that attempt to approach the Singularity will be violently hurled away. The Singularity cannot be healed, but is highly resistant to all forms of damage and nearly impervious to Controlling type powers.

I just realized how crazy a modern day updated City of Heroes/Villians would be with Mission Architect expanded.

One can hope that City of Titans is good and does not stray too much from the original. I know they will definetly change some things to make it a standalone game on top of being a succesor. I just hope the shitty MMO community won't destroy it like they did to Wildstar. Admittedly City of Heroes was always kind of a niche game in the first place....

Edit: Just checked some of the information on the website for City of Titans, it appears the Mastermind archetype will come back with a new name of the Operator Archetype but not on launch. I could't be any more happy that they didn't get rid of those powers/abilities as I have such fond memories of tearing apart heroes, gangbangers, and cultists with my army of zombies along with a whole array of poisons, soul-sucking powers, pain augmentors...hell I remember even trying out a Necromancer with weather support powers

I still have the Mids Hero Designer on my computer, and all the sets I made for my mains. It's a little surprising how much +Recharge you could fit into the Mind/Psionic dominator.

I remember when I made a build to get perma-hasten on my force field defender.

Only thing it was good for was perma-detention field in Pv P. But those were glorious cries of hate I heard

I am looking back at all the videos....and damn did I not realize until now how much I loved this game and now miss it. Heh....I remember every MMO after my Co H/V experience I looked for good communities (I never found them) and I hoped that someone would make a interesting Necromancer pets class.

I should of just stuck with this game to get that.......hopefully City of Titans will be good (I am a bit unhappy to find out that the community seems to have split up in 3 projects....so far City of Titans appeals the most)

While nobody was looking, City of Heroes came back. Sort of. The dedicated fans at the Titan Network have jerry-rigged the game to run off their server as a sort of 3d chat room called Paragon Chat.

You can recreate your characters, walk around the zones and chat and do emotes with other players. There's no enemies in the zones, or missions or powers. People are just hanging out, roleplaying and just being happy the game is around in some form.

For people with no direct knowledge of the game's server software, this is a huge feat. That's how die hard the fans of this game are. It makes the game's owners shuttering it even more of an injustice.

I'm going to wait and see if they'll find a way to throw travel powers, enemies and combat into it as well. I'm probably expecting too much, but I went on a Paragon Wiki binge recently, and ended up wishing I could go back and play it again.

I will probably get in trouble for necromancing this thread but I still think it's worth pointing out that the City of Titans (that might need its own page eventually once it eventually is ready for beta and launch) spiritual successor project is still coming along.

On the topic of games made in honor of City Of Heroes Valiance Online is in the alpha stages. I am unaware of how Heroes and Villains is doing though. Kinda sad to see the community split in three though and working on separate projects with separate directions. I am personally in the City of Titans crowd (I appear on the forums every now and then under the same name). City Of Heroes was a great MMO game, probably one the best games in the MMO market for it's community before it was killed but it still had it's issues.

City Of Heroes was infamous amongst the late devs for having a spaghetti code. Which basically meant that while they tried to fix and add the game a ridiculous amount of things would break. It got to the point were they were reaching there end of the amount of stuff they could add into the game in the first place before the plug. Paragon Studios has my respect for dealing with that for years and trying to give the players the much requested Moon Base before the game reached it's end.

City of Titans is going in the spiritual successor direction, Valiance I think is more like a sequel to City of Heroes, and again I have no clue what the hell Heroes and Villains are doing.

well,. the short version

about a month ago it was discovered a group known as SCORE has been running a functioning private server for years, only telling a very few about it at a time, due to a nameless Co H dev giving them the database servers.

a giant flamewar of accusations erupted in every direction, and eventually, on advice of outlets like massively OP and Titan network among others, it seems the people behind the SCORE servers have released the code to the public. There are now 4 functioning private servers, and apparently Titan network is in talks with N Csoft to get an official sanction for the private Co H servers.

The servers are not really private. You can download it here. There is however some people running private servers and another group named Thundergroupgaming that is running servers of their own.

I can confirm that its pretty active and thriving for the most part. I am still curious how City Of Titans will turn out but until either NC Soft crashes the party on these servers or the next-gen superhero successor MM Os come out I will be playing with my old childhood game for now.

and who knows, maybe the negotiations work out this time and N Csoft officially sanctions the servers

#1874: May 4th 2019 at 9:22:04 PM

I doubt it. From what I have heard part of the reason why NC Soft never gave up the City of Heroes IP despite many many other companies offering to pick it up is possibly due to a cultural issue. In South Korea its considered shameful to admit your product has failed and to hand it off to someone else. If that is the case that would explain why they never gave it up despite the fact that they already have their own cashcow MM Os like Guild Wars 2.

Although maybe they could of changed their minds on this? I don't know, best to play the game now just in case.

Best case scenario: they see there's still a market for Co H 2 and greenlight it. There have been pitch attempts in the past by a couple of people that were shot down. Maybe between this buzz about the private server, and the fact we're living in the age of Avengers Endgame and My Hero Punch Man, things could go differently this time.
