Tumblr

Just tried to login from work and got a message saying " We sent you a login link! We sent an email to [email]. It contains a magic link that'll log you in."

Then there was a gray box that said 'Use password to log in' so I did that and it worked fine. Checking my email got a message that said "Welcome back, [name]! Tap the button to log into Tumblr."

I don't get this change. I GUESS it makes sense if you forgot your password but that might make it more enticing for people to break into your email!

I get that too. It's weird. They obviously did some recoding. Hell my browser wouldn't even remember my old password, prompting me to reset it, and this is at the same time I had to do the same with OTHER sites I have accounts with! It leads me to believe these are all in response to the new UK internet laws, or, even more frightening, Net Neutrality's demise going into effect starting in the past week!

I've had a Tumblr for about a month now, and I'm so close to getting rid of it. I made it primarily for Star Wars, hoping to find some interesting theories and cool fan art.

God damn, was that a mistake. I had never heard of "antis" until getting on Tumblr, but they basically dedicate a ridiculous amount of time to making content against something they hate.

Why? If you find a popular character/show/ship, whatever it is, so unpleasant that you spend all day reblogging hate shit against it and harassing people that enjoy it, it's time to quit. You've gone to far. Unplug and move on from this particular creation, it's not for you anymore. Go find something you actually like and leave other people alone.

There's a difference between "I dislike this thing, I don't want to interact with it anymore" and "I hate this thing with a fiery passion and I will tell everyone about it, create fan media against it, and pick fights with everyone who enjoys it and call them an {insert buzzword here}."

People take it so damn far. Doxxing, feeding needles to people, making fake "pride flags" for being an anti shipper.. I just...

What the absolute fuck, Tumblr.

Yeah antis are... annoying. I tend to avoid them. Tumblr is sort of a chaotic sprawl of communities that allow for information to be dispersed very rapidly but it can also lead to uhm, very worrying groups gaining some small amount of social power.

I think the worst part is that, at least where Star Wars is concerned, it's almost impossible to avoid shipping drama on Tumblr. So much in the main Star Wars tag is also tagged with a pro ship or anti ship tag, which leads to some crazy shit in the notes.

I don't consider myself a huge shipper. There's pairings I like, but I don't define who I am by them. I just... Like them. But everything on Tumblr is so extreme.

I don't get why everyone has to be "pro" or "anti". What happened to just liking something or not being interested and moving on?

It worries me that people think this is normal. That's not a good mind set the be in.

So the Srs Answer that you never asked for, is that tumblr is a wasteland with no content moderation. This means that it's hard to say, browse the star wars tag without encountering all things created. This means that occasionally there really ARE super tasteless stuff that fandom produces. Some stuff might be triggering, or just kind of ideologically uh... fascist. stuff like that.

But you can't really do much to curate your experience. You can't just block those groups and move on, tumblr's blocking mechanic isn't good enough. and it's not like other internet groups where you have to actively look for it.

So, as a result, the only way to "community curate" (which is a healthy and normal part of fandom) is to basically try and outright ban things and make sure no one does it (which is not a healthy or normal part of fandom).

I just don't search for anything, ever.

Yeah. You just have to curate your dash. You can get a good stream of content tailored to what you want.

I mostly use mine to follow a bunch of artists (and upload my own stuff on it).

I use my account for following and comissioning artists for my written characters. Also have dabbled in an small amount of RP.

I do understand the frustration though. In fandoms you either tend to see people whom are extreme on all asides although I absolutely despise the very obvious anti-SJ Ws that are just there to spew their own hate. I genuinely do not get why they even bother spending time on an site they clearly dislike.

There is a few idiots in the Cyberpunk 2077 fandom that were unironically triggered by the game having an LGBT fanbase on Tumblr already and are spamming their stupid shit their. They also are those annoying rude ass breed of nerds that try to gatekeep the shit out of the genre. Really hate gatekeepers.

I wonder if the company that now owns Tumblr ever bothers to check and moderate the site since there's a lot of content that are just weird, Anti-something and NSFW like porn and incest fanfics......

Fanfics ? There are full on incest smut blogs by the dozens.

There are snuff ( purely fantasy as far as I can tell ) fetish blogs.

I've been followed by so many porn blogs, it's unreal. They're everywhere, often spamming notes and putting popular tags on their porn content so it shows up when you check tags that are completely unrelated to porn. Doesn't seem like Tumblr really does anything to stop it.

I noticed that there was porn or fetish images getting past the sfw filter quite a few times.

I don't think Tumblr has ever had much in the way of moderation, that's kind of why it is the way it is.

They added a useless automated SFW option that picks up skin coloured furniture I guess.

They also tried to screw over NSFW artists a few times by just automatically enabling the safety filter for people who had previously disabled it. :/

Oh yeah that too, I had a car and a vampire squid post censored and a blatant sex post not censored (granted it was text). It being used to screw over NSFW artists makes sense.

NSFW art is literally the main reason I even have a Tumblr to begin with.

I keep deleting my Tumblrs because I'm bad at curating

Tumblr is missing from Apple’s App Store

Said "issue" apparently being NSFW artists, considering some people already got booted off the platform.

You think at some point sites like Tumblr and Patreon would learn.

It's not artists, it's an absolute avalanche of porn-bot spam that has been plaguing the whole place for months that staff don't seem to have done much to stall, at least not successfully.

It better be unintentional, and there better be a way for people to get their NSFW blogs back, otherwise they're cutting off their nose to spite their face.
