Plus, I don't think that it made them do a 180. The slingshot around the sun graphic is a bit misleading, but i looked at it as such (using compass directions, even though space doesn't use compasses):
Destiny is heading north to it's next destination. A star appears out of nowhere (it's not on the map) out of the west. Destiny probably could just continue north and get out of range of the star's gravity, and the hit FTL, but we don't know how long that'd take. Destiny likely did the calculations as it dropped out of FTL, and decided it would be faster to slingshot around the star than to just fly straight.
Just the way I interpreted the situation.
Damn episode 14 was great. Best episode since 'Time'.
Certainly a recovery from the epic fail that was episode 13.
"Human" was good and better yet, we're this close to unlocking control on Destiny. Really can't wait for that.
Plus, it's another (dead) civilization. Gives me more hope for more exploration episodes.
We'll see about the control bit. There's another fun way they could reunite the cast, after all...
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages? When does it go up on hulu? I don't get a chance to watch it on fridays.
Fight smart, not fair.It goes up on Hulu Saturday morning at the earliest, Sunday evening at the latest.
The only thing that bothers me about this episode... I'm interested to see the story explanation as to why they will be able to go back for the stars, but not the supporting cast that were left behind in Faith.
Who says they won't? That obelisk is begging to be reexamined.
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?Wow. They're carrying this arc out a bit longer... there's actually some potential for fun here.
Even if it was less than successful, I can't have been the only one waiting for a gate-hopping sequence; hope to see more of that in the future, maybe if they can ever manage to slow down that timer.
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages? One thing that I didn't understand was Rush continuing to respond to events in the delusion after he realized it was a delusion. If he's supposed to be all "the ends justify the means", I don't see why he'd pay any attention to the hallucination of his wife.
After all, remember when O'Neill said, "I lost my son! I know! And as much as I...I could never live that over again. Could you!"
I have to admit to being surprised at the ending of "Lost". I expected them to catch up at the last moment. So now what?
Trump delenda estIt's possible they learn to control the ship somewhat, though not necessary. Consider- the aliens have supposedly been after the Destiny for quite some time. Destiny hops galaxies on a semi-regular basis; the aliens presumably have galaxy-crossing technology to keep up with it, which the marooned could potentially piggyback on, willingly or unwillingly.
Though from the next episode description, I think it's more likely that something happens to draw the ship back into the galaxy on its own judgment call.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?yes, they can never be allowed to gain full control because if that happens what's to prevetn them from flying it home.
Trump delenda estIt's a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong way back.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages? And the ship doesn't have hyperdrive, just FTL, so even if they could turn it around, they MIGHT make it back before the Sun dies. Most likely not, though.
@Swish: That's pretty obvious. The extras that got left behind on the Planet Obelisk wanted to stay there, whereas the stars that got stuck on Planet Spider got trapped. Coming back for the former would be forced relocation, whereas coming back for the later is a rescue mission.
They'd still have to follow Destiny's flight path because at the end of the day, Destiny's path is the one designed to take them to planets with Stargates and useful resources.
I thought it just took them into range. Do we know what the range on the Destiny gate is?
Fight smart, not fair.Less than the distance between FTL dropouts, as seen most recently.
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages? Is anybody really surprised that the two guys and a girl made it back onto the ship due to engine malfunction? It was was also refreshing to see Rush through more sympathetic eyes.
Bah. See, this show has so much potential, but they keep dropping the interesting ideas in favor of relationship drama.
So... what, did the ship dropping out somehow make it dialable again? I thought based on "Air" that it dropped out of FTL in response to connections...
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?Basically, they said ship cannot be dailed while in FTL mode and the malfunction took care of that. But I would think they would have been out of range by the time the engine blew a gasket. What exactly is the range of these stargates in light years anyway?
Under standard conditions a Stargate can dial anything within the same galaxy without an additional source of power.
Except the gates in Universe are apparently much lower-powered- hence the need for gate-hopping in the first place.
Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?Anyone else bugged by those constant random music inserts they have?
Wut? Most Hyper Space is of the "continuous energy required" variety in SG.
Fight smart, not fair.
