The Great Nitpicky Live Blog of El Goonish Shive:

 1 A H R, Wed, 13th Oct '10 2:19:03 PM from Crevice of your Mind
Resistance is Futile
Greetings. I am AHR.

I read a little webcomic series called El Goonish Shive.

And to be honest, I hate it quite a bit.

Not to say that it's bad, just not very good.

So, at the request of one troper (yes, shockingly high number I know), I decided to make a live blog.

I would be starting with the early stuff (which is clearly much more sucky than the present strips) and would try to go through ten or more at a time until the plot shows up.

Wheee! I'll get started with the first couple, and heres hoping some people will be interested in reading.

WARNING:

The Contents of this liveblog might be VERY nitpicky at times.

Strip 1.

Art: Obviously, Shive improved quite a lot in his present state of drawing. That does not mean I'm going to refrain from nitpicking the hell out of the art.
  • Elliot's eyes in the first panel are lopsided
  • Tedd's head keeps changing in size and shape, as well as his hair. First panel he has a narrow head, next it's wider but he has uneven lengths of hair, what is this?
  • Elliot's hand in the last panel. What in the world happened to that thumb?
  • Elliot's hair strands start stringy, but end up chunky
  • What happened to Tedd's shirt collar in the penultimate panel?

Content: The jokes are rather obvious, although they get points for being honest.
  • Here we see the beginning of Shive's lampshading abilities. As you can see, they are not very subtle. Or very good.
  • Also, the final joke is pretty tacked on. It's far too rushed and would have been done much better if there was a beat panel in between.

Strip 2.

Art:
  • Tedd's 3/4th view in the first panel is...creepy. The left side of his face is just smooshed.
  • Elliot has no wrist in the first panel. Just a weird bendy bone arm.
  • ATTACK OF THE GIGANTIC KILLA HANDS! RUNN!
  • —ahem— anyway, notice that when turned to the side, Tedd's glasses magically become square. Truly a mystery for the ages.
  • Finally, the background floor line is rather messily done, with it usually cutting off before hitting anything.

Content: Oh sure, NOW we get a beat panel.
  • I dislike it when Shive tries to parody male sexuality. Mostly because he does it constantly to the point it just gets boring. But, that is a complaint for another day.
  • Elliot is quite the user of big words here, with Tedd being the one that does nothing but say one worded retorts. This is clearly a case of Characterization Marches On but...
  • The dialogue is badly done. Specifically, what Elliot says. It sounds...fake. Obviously, Rule of Funny lets little gaps in things like this slide and Realistic Diction Is Unrealistic, but once again, this is going to be a reocurring problem with Shive.

Strip 3.

Art:
  • The weird cartoony hands are back, as opposed to the blockish ones from the last strip. Note the lack of wrists. Again.
  • We also see Shive attempting to draw boobs. He does them well. No complaints here.
  • ...Elliot's head...why is there...a hump...on it?
  • Tedd's glasses are rectangular again, and he also can't open his mouth without having an artist SNAFU, it seems.

Content: First female character and...
  • So, we see the delighted use of female on male violence. Cause it's funny. Cause, you know, Tedd was being all perverted. So Sarah hit him! Hah. Ahah. Haaaa. -_-.
    • Aren't they...friends...by this point? Don't you think Sarah would be somewhat used to it?
      • Straw Feminist Tirade: BLARGLE FLARG HOW DARE YOU ABUSE THIS DOUBLE STANDARD IT'S NOT FUNNY IT'S A STUPID OUTDATED JOKE THAT EVERY ROMANTIC COMEDY AND THEIR MOTHER HAS USED BLARGLE FLARG
  • Sarah is without her normal character either. Once again, we will be seeing it march on, but it's still a bit jarring to see. And the reason that the first chunk of EGS is so much more horrible than the second chunk of the already not good EGS.

Strip 4

Art:
  • Elliot was dropped on the head when he was a baby. No brain damage, just an oddly shaped head.
  • More rectangle glasses. Wheeeeeee.
  • Hey look. Second panel. Do you see it? Tedd actually has a wee bit of a forehead!
  • Elliot's neck in the second panel. I can see it crossing over into his face. What is this?
  • The sign. Look at that sign. It bends inwards for pete's sake! Ridiculous!
  • Tedd is not sitting. He is hovering.

Content:
  • AHAHA OH THOSE MALE BOYS AND THEIR PERVERTEDNESS! THIS JOKE WILL NEVER GET OLD!

Strip 5

Art:
  • What is wrong with Elliot's hand? It looks like a wing. Specifically, Lugia's wing.
  • More amazing sitting from the guys.
  • Third panel, we see Tedd's eyeglasses slipping. Or maybe a bad lopsided drawing. One of those.
  • The last and penultimate panel show that Shive can't draw girl waists. Yet, anyway.
  • ...how short is Sarah's hair, exactly? It seems to vary from strip to strip.

Content:
  • What time is it? Time for ANOTHER violence joke!
    • The main problem I have with these is that they are so...simplistic. Anyone could make jokes like these. They are not very unique, clever or interesting. Or funny.
  • Why must she repeat what the punchline was LAST time? Wouldn't it have been better to see her walking by, stopping, staring at the sign and the two and then freaking out?
  • The hammers are here. We will be seeing them again. They actually made me laugh once. Once.

Whelp, that's the first five strips nitpicked and critted!

Next update we get kraaaaazzzzy foreign scientists, a colored page, ANNNDDDD

the PLOT!

The question remains: Who would win in a douche-off, Dan Shive or Tim Buckley?

Tim Buckley. Dan Shive has been reported to be quite a nice person. He probably is.

I am looking forward to this, especially once the plot starts.

I have a love-hate relations ship with this comics. Setting wise, it has everything I want from a Superhero comic - the Fantasy Kitchen Sink- and the plot is interesting. Otherwise, I wouldn't even read it. And yet, I can't stand it. I can't pinpoint it, but I guess it comes from the mediocre characters as well as from the overall tone of the comic

Tim Buckley.

I mean obviously. Nearly anybody could beat Dan Shive in a douche-off.
I'm convinced that our modern day analogues to ancient scholars are comedians. -0dd1

Little known fact. The Nostalgia Critic and Dan Shive went to the same college. They even shared some classes together.

I occasionally find The Nostalgia Critic funny, though I often find him to be too shrieky and this sentence has nothing to do with the topic at hand so I'll end it now.

O_o. What's this? People posting who are not obligated to (coughcakmancough)? Wowza.

Strip 6

Art:
  • Apparently, the German stole Tedd's shirt.
  • First panel- long hair. Second panel- really short hair. Fourth panel- an inbetween length of hair.
  • The pole is female, clearly. Look at the curves on that thing. Sexy.
  • Is her pigtail...pointy, at the top?
  • I really shouldn't have mentioned Tedd's lack of a forehead, it's all I can see when I look at the girl now.

Content:
  • We have two of the three filler compadres (and a later fourth, making them the three musketeers). I never particularly liked them, but I never really had a grudge against them either.
  • The joke in the first panel is fairly simple, but it's ruined by how wordy it is. There is no need to cram in the words 'stereotypical german scientist' that way. It's just bad lampshading. Especially compared to a later joke when he makes a visual joke such as this one and does not explain it at all. At least that's something to look forward to.
  • It is here we find out that our very own Dan Shive is a...a...WEEABOO!!!. Horrifying, I know.
    • On the more serious side of things, it does serve as a warning to the amount of animéness that is in it. Some is played straight, some is parodied, and other things are more subtle, like Nanase's heritage. This isn't what I would call a bad trait, but it's nothing I'd want to call unique or spectacular. At the same time, it clashes with the tone of the rest of the series and to be honest, I think that it would have been better off without.
      • Disclaimer: The absence of animé would not eliminate the only black character from existance in EGS
  • On to the actual joke. Yet another joke about male sexuality. You know, I'd like to see one about female sexuality. Maybe have Sarah trying to get Elliot and Tedd to kiss, or the girl scientist trying to beef up the German guy.
  • Once again, the joke is ruined by the explanation. It would have been better if Shive had relied on a more visual cue, or perhaps change the sentence to something more concise.

Strip 7

Art:
  • So I'm NOT color blind after all!
  • It amuses me that Elliot's shirt does not change at all. It could be laziness, it could be intentional. Who knows?
  • In the first panel, Tedd's hair is short and minorly jagged. By the fifth panel, it has gotten longer and much more obviously jagged. Clearly, all that hair pulling had its benefits.
  • Here's something new, robot fingers on Tedd, panel two.
  • Elliot, never make that fifth panel facial expression ever again. In all honesty, you should stop emoting entirely. You seem to have an alarming tendency of making weird faces. I could probably keep a counter on it. Maybe I will.
  • Why are the backgrounds constantly changing color?
  • I think that judging by one of the previous strips and this strip, it is safe to say Tedd is toothless.
  • Why does the German have a speck of black in his hair?

Content:
  • Once again, wordy Elliot, simplistic Tedd. It's a bit...odd. Also, I think Shive originally intended Elliot to be a Deadpan Snarker. Clearly, that did not follow through.
  • More lampshading in an awkward manner! Geebus Shive, you just love hitting the same four notes over and over again don'tcha? WORDY LAMPSHADE! MALE HORMONE JOKE! HAMMER VIOLENCE! A WORDY LAMPSHADE ABOUT MALE HORMONES THAT ENDS IN HAMMER VIOLENCE!
  • This is where it gets obvious Shive is listening to feedback with each strip. The censored joke is the type of thing that works better as a one off, but he brought it back, and I suspect it's because people asked him.
    • So he brought it back.
      • And it sucked.
  • The joke is actually OK, but it's ruined by the wordy explanation at the end. I feel like I'm reading CAD here. Not a good thing.

Strip 8

Art:
  • Where'd all the colors go? Where'd the large layout go? Eh, whatevs, less work for me.
  • FINALLY! Someone with rectangular glasses through and through!
    • Only in the first panel they are given a 3D like depth, and in the next two they are portrayed flat like.
  • Tedd, do you just give your shirt to like, EVERY guy you sleep with? It's a really bad habit to get into.
  • The teacher nose goes from being curved to being rather pointy.
  • Hey look! Forehead! Sort of!
  • Look at that thumb. It looks like a tiny little mass of fat. I bet if you pressed it it would just go inside his hand.

Content:
  • This is the first comic I'd deem as not entirely horrible.
  • The beginning joke is actually worded pretty well, as well as the end joke.
  • The teacher does NOT reply to Tedd, and only gives a facepalm. Well done.
  • Now, while the execution was done well, the joke itself is once again pretty clichéd and nothing I would call new.
  • Finally, the one thing I'd say he had a problem with execution wise is that thought bubble second panel. It's pretty needless. It's telling, not showing. SHOW us that the teacher is aggravated, don't TELL us!

Strip 9

Art:
  • WHOAH! ACTUAL POSES! AND ACTION! IF ONLY THEY DIDN'T REAK OF AMATEURITY!
  • Elliot has gone back to full black mouth. No more teeth for him. Clearly, Tedd savagedly removed all of his teeth so creepy Elliot face will never be seen again. Or Shive realized he sucked at drawing them. But that's getting meta about it.
  • The goo...does not really look like goo. It looks...shiny, and...not gooey. I'd be inclined to say gunky, if anything.
  • ACTION LINES OF FAIL! Although, I must say it's interesting how he placed the SFX.
  • Elliot has lobster claws for hands in the penultimate panel
  • Now we see Elliot's hair has fully evolved into faux-animé style that will follow him around until Shive learns how to shade.
  • Look at Tedd's finger in the final panel. Don't you just want to bend it backwards? It's already half way there...

Content:
  • Exposition to the rescue. It lets us know why Tedd and Elliot have nets, even though it should be somewhat understandable since goo just came alive. It tells us where the goo is, even though we see it in the panel. It explains to us the goo slips through nets, even though that's exactly what was drawn. And it lets us know that yes, to do such a thing was stupid.
  • That's...really about it. Shive put telling over showing. Not much else to say.

Strip 10

Art:
  • The perspective, it burnssss us master. It burns us so. Make the pain go away master, it burnses us...
  • I do like how Shive used different font for the sound effects. It's a nice touch. Now if only those sound effects were placed better.
  • Tedd must have touched the teacher's thumb. He has the fatness too. That's what you get for sleeping with a guy like that.
  • The goo does not look like goo. It looks like one of those paintings you make by putting a glob of paint in the middle and folding it down the middle.

Content:
  • Exposition saves the world again from having to show the goo disappearing! Whooooooh.
  • ...
    • ...
      • ...
        • WHY ARE THERE STEROIDS IN A BLEEPING SCHOOL?!?!
  • Also, while the star wars reference makes sense (and is a fairly par for course joke with no real uniqueness to it) Tedd's punchline does not. I think Shive was still painting him as the stupid one to Elliot's straight man-ness.

YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR!

Only in the first panel they are given a 3D like depth, and in the next two they are portrayed flat like.
It's called depth, little Ms. Nitpicky, they're being shown from a side view. The glasses are just thick.

WHY ARE THERE STEROIDS IN A BLEEPING SCHOOL?!?!
I think this is meant to be a quip at the school's sports teams. Either that or their nurse's office is highly advanced.

I think Shive was still painting him as the stupid one to Elliot's straight man-ness.
Stupid? Really? I always interpreted him as just being a Cloudcuckoulander in the beginning.

The perspective, it burnssss us master. It burns us so. Make the pain go away master, it burnses us...
Oy, perspective is a curse on all of us doomed to pick up a pencil and do something with it.

Cakman- if you want to debate in general EGS, take it to the actual forums.

AC- he is most likely referring to Elliot/Ellen. Which can be justified due to how the ray works but still an iffy grounds to stand on.

Yeah, it's the nature of how the ray works. We all know how Ellen is significantly... Better equipped, I mean... uh... wears bigger boots-er, Drinks out of larger cups... Wait... uh... has a stronger back? I suck at this, don't I?

Gr. Had planned on doing five more yesterday, but then I pressed the back button by accident, and lost my progress. Lost my motivation.

But I'm baack!

...no need to hold your applause.

Please.

Strip 11 Art:
  • OMIGOD! THE SECOND PANEL! TEDD! HIS FOREHEAD! IT'S GONE! NO! SERIOUSLY GUYS! THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN LAST TIME! HIS PROFILE LINE DOES NOT GO ALL THE WAY!
  • Also, in the last panel, it looks like he's looking down at the goo, when he is not in context.
  • Other than those two things, there really isn't anything new
    • Rectangle glasses
    • Toothless Tedd
    • Narrow Head Tedd
    • Neck line breaching the jaw line
    • Mario Hands
  • It just feels redundant to complain about.
  • However, I did like how the growing goo was placed at the bottom of the page.

Content:
  • Post one has some more lovely exposition
  • And then your standard set up for tempting fate.
  • Also...why does steroids affect the goo like that? It absorbed testosterone, but didn't it absorb anything else like the nets? Also, why did it make it bigger? Steroids stunted growth I thought. Also, lack of hair. Why did it affect it so quickly? Why does it have eyes? Why does it have a mouth? Why in the world did Shive make this the first villain?

Strip 12

Art:
  • Those lockers look like mini doors. My lockers were always that height, but extremely narrow. What about y'alls schools?
  • —squints— Did...did Elliot just gain a watch?
  • Dear god. Look at that smiley face. It looks like something I drew when I was six.
  • I'm a bit miffed how he put that effort into making a background panel one, but then doesn't draw it again. He did it previously in strip 10. It makes it look like him and the goo are in a much more open field than they really are.
  • Elliot's hand in the final panel screams to me 'I wish Shive had just stuck with the four fingered hand'.
  • And now the goo has teeth. Why? BECAUSE!

Content:
  • So, now that the goo is too big to...go through a net...Elliot can fight him! Or something.
  • Think about it, if it had stayed tiny, it probably could have easily escaped. It should have eaten some pop rocks instead. That would have been awesome.

Strip 13

Art:
  • Behold! Moë Elliot! You may now vomit.
  • Bent pole is bent
  • That text. I never cared about font before, but it's really bad. It just doesn't stand out. That is 'write an essay' font, not 'this is a notice!' font.
  • Shive REALLY liked gradients back in the day didn't he? Look at that darkness fade to white in the center. Bet he thinks it's classy or something.
    • Well, it IS better than a white background...
      • BUT IT DOESN'T BEAT AN ACTUAL BACKGROUND SO THERE!
        • PS- Only shojos use gradients, Shive :P

Content:
  • ...
  • ...
  • Uhm...
  • ...yay filler?

Strip 14

Art:
  • The colors! They hast return! I CAN SEE!
  • Gradients galore. Where are they? The fuck if I know, but the next time I go to Moperville, I'm gonna let them know red is a shitty color to paint the walls.
  • MOAR ACTION! And boy oh BOY is it painful! The fork throw was OK, but everything else leaves much to be desired. SERIOUSLY. Is the goo attempting to PUNCH Elliot or aim projectile goo at him?
    • Oh, and remember how I said the art gets much better?
      • Yeah. This? THIS NEVER DOES! EVER!
  • So, why does that fork move perfectly horizontally? Even when travelling through what has to be at least a semi solidish object? Even when moving through water it should have been bent a bit.
    • Also, bent in angle in the first place due to, y'know, gravity.
  • So...a fork eh? Are they in the cafeteria? I WOULDN'T KNOW! I'VE APPARENTLY STUMBLED INTO BLEACH!

Content:
  • MORTAL KOMBAT! WHOO!
  • Here we see that Elliot uses japanese names. This doesn't mean much, but later on this will get expanded into what I see as a very poorly thought out character trait.
    • As for the joke itself behind it, I'll give him points for trying something new, but it still isn't what I'd call lolworthy.
  • Also, if the goo is some odd substance, shouldn't you do some research on what that substance is? You're in highschool! You've taken chemistry before haven't you? And if you haven't, Tedd has.
  • Yes, Elliot. We know it didn't do anything. Thank you for you telling us.

Strip 15

Art:
  • Back to the greyscale. I think that Shive only did the color so that everyone would know the color the goo was. wild mass guess
  • Elliot...he has no nose in his profiles, and it's REALLY obvious here. Seriously, it looks like just a black face lip or something...
  • Tedd's hai-HOSHIT! HE DOES HAVE TEETH! I am in shock.
  • Tedd no longer has the dreaded stubby fat thumb. He has transferred it to Elliot, it seems.
  • That last panel has some very sketchy remnants. It's a bit hard to see, but there seem to be more left over lines than normal...

Content:
  • So...what has this goo done so far? Stolen cafeteria food. It seems to be pretty harmless. Considering that Elliot was able to leave without any repercussions...
    • I mean, it's not the GOO 's fault that his color scheme is what it is, and that his smile is creepy. I'm sure all he needs is a hug.
  • Oh Tedd. You. Endless barrel of LOLPERVJOKES aren'tcha?
    • In all seriousness, this joke would have worked a LOT better if we saw Elliot running into Tedd, Tedd not yelling that, and instead the girls locker room door being drawn in the background, with Tedd's hand on the door knob.
  • It would also have meant this strip could have been merged with another, to give it more substance.

Tune in next time for an actual sight gag (which is actually pretty funny) and one of the scariest faces made by Elliot in EGS history!
