Venom Snake is a body double brainwashed into believing he's Big Boss after the actual Big Boss narrowly survived an assassination attempt. He goes on to be the Big Boss who dies in the original NES games, while actual Big Boss continues to operate in the background until his return in MGS4.
Revolver Ocelot spends the game basically relaying instructions from Big Boss to Venom Snake in the guise of being a supportive underling helping Venom Snake along. It's actually kind of funny how obviously Ocelot's authority supercedes Venom Snake's on a second playthrough.

Specifically, one of the tricks the game plays on you is in the beginning, it asks you to create a character with a face and name, under the guise of that being Snake's new fake identity. However, the plastic surgery to change his face gets interrupted, and then you play through the entire game as Snake. But in the end, it's revealed that the surgery succeeded, and that the name and face you entered in the beginning is your real identity.

Is there any reason he has to go for a headshot with the tranq darts? Wouldn't a shot to the neck or anywhere else be fine?
