There is also this weird tonal shift towards hyper-detailed world and character models.

Why.

WHY.

[up] Can anyone say Uncanny Valley, especially with the animal characters? This reminds me a lot of Jak 2. First game was cartoony and mostly family friendly with some dark elements and was received well, but the second went more realistic and much darker and edgier in an attempt to appeal to casual American/European gamers who mostly play realistic shooters/sandbox games and got a much more mixed reception. Beyond Good and Evil 2 looks like it's gonna be the same, but with the Darker and Edgier turned up even more with the swearing and realistic graphics instead of the colourful cartoony artstyle of the first game.

It's a bit darker than the original in tone, but the original was also about uncovering the truth about at tyrannical corporation and the inhumane experiments and business practices they employed, so it's not like the first was super happy go lucky to begin with.

So BG&E 2 is officially alive again, though still a ways from being real. There is no release date and the trailer is concept, not gameplay so we are probably a couple years out yet.

On the official site you can sign up to be part of the "Space Monkeys" program which supposedly will let you in on development discussions and feedback. (This is not crowdfunding.)

There is talk of an online component. Ubi's site touts "Play the adventure by yourself or with friends in a vast and seamless online playground". At the least I suspect we're looking at online co-op; with the space exploration element it sounds like they might take some cues from No Man's Sky plus the exploration elements of the original game?

The afro girl is named Shani (!). The monkey is Knox. The captian of the ship with those telltale green eyes is named Dakini.

Plot speculation time: I would be surprised of Dakini is not Jade's mother and similarly I would be surprised if we don't meet P'eyj at some point in the game, making him a bridge between the two games. Space travel is a thing while in the original game the Dre'j control space. The map Knox steals for them is for some mysterious and dangerous space artifact; possibly our explorers open the can of worms that kicks off the Dre'j invasion and the genesis of Jade? And what will Shani's connection be?

[up] Sounds like they are getting rid of the Zelda/Star Fox Adventures-style of gameplay, which is a big disappointment. Also, UUUGGGHH those realistic graphics. Why couldn't they just stick to a cartoony style like the first game?

[up]In my post some way above, I chose the words carefully. It is NOT realistic, but DETAILED.

And I hope their online mode will not fuck up the linear story mode.

ALSO, I believe the game is mostly complete. Remember the 2009 video? That was gameplay (although that build certainly does not exist anymore).

It's good we're getting anything of this universe, but man, it's a damn shame the cliffhanger won't be followed up on, and Jade was, and still is a large draw to the game.

I think it's more likely that any work we saw in the 2009 clips has been scrapped and the game restarted from scratch. They mentioned that the last three years have gone into a new engine (to go with the console generation jump in that time) and that footage was a lot more focused on whom we thought at the time were Jade and Pey'j.

I'd be surprised if there's not ground combat of some description but how and what is completely in the air as far as I'm concerned.

[up][up]This is not a reboot. What reasons do you have to suspect they will just ignore the first game and not follow up on it?

It's a prequel, so logically they can't.

[up]That explains everything.

EDIT: I did not realize the above embed has commentary.

Tried to register for Space Monkeys.

The only thing I can say is that their servers are most likely overloaded and unresponsive.

In other words, I could not sign up (endless loading was endless).
