Gon ditching the fishing rod also represents him taking on a darker and more vicious turn. Gon's use of the fishing rod was more about stealth and guile and outwitting a foe. Gon's Janken Nen technique by contrast is mostly about hitting the enemy really hard.
This culminates in his last fight using Nen in the Chimera Ant arc. He doesn't bother trying to outwit Neferpitou to overcome the vast power difference. Gon's in a dark enough place that he simply resorts to sacrificing everything to brute force enough raw power to crush Neferpitou.

Disgusted, but not surprisedImagine a timeline where Gon is a Conjurer and his Hatsu is something like Pesci's Beach Boy.
Killua by contrast develops a more childlike and innocent — though still dangerous — combat style to show how his friendship with Gon and others has changed him. He started out doing shit like ripping out hearts, but eventually starts throwing around electrified yo-yos.
Disgusted, but not surprisedOn the topic of characters mirroring each other, I saw this take on Tumblr:
A few of these are a bit of a stretch but overall Kurapika and Leorio do make good foils for one another.
Them being foils was set up from their introduction. Kurapika initially seems like the one who takes the honor of being a Hunter seriously, while Leorio initially seems like he's just in it for the money. They initially don't get along as a result. Then they learn their true motivations. Kurapika's actually in it for revenge and is willing to become the kind of Hunter who takes the worst jobs to fulfill it, while Leorio actually wants the money so he can become a doctor who treats people for free. They both develop more sympathy for each other as a result.
Kurapika respects Leorio for being more noble and selfless than he first thought, while Leorio sympathizes with Kurapika after realizing he's not a preachy do-gooder but someone else who lost people they cared about.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI wish Nen Impact had Assist characters. Characters that aren't playable but have stronger assist moves. Because that's the only way it would make sense for Melody to be in the game, she's not much of a fighter.
I also miss the fishing rod. In fact I thought Gon's ability would incorporate it in some way. But power systems move on.
