[up][up][up] and [up][up] What are your replying for? O.o

First, "bit of both" what? Have I spoke of two possibilities? And what being asked to dance have to do with worrying about dress?

[up]It is not about Tomboys. It is about Ash. I can't really see he worrying about how she looks, girl or not. But I guess it makes sense if you assume she was just nervous about an unfamiliar situation. (I doubt she went to many 15 years sweet sixteen parties).

But, so, what is a Sophomore semi-formal?

Well, for those schools that have them (US schools are Your Mileage May Vary applied to educational systems), a sophomore semi-formal would be a school dance with a dress code. boys in shirts with collars and nice trousers, no jeans or ripped t-shirts, and girls in dresses. As opposed to "casual" school dances where the kids would show up in anything they like that won't get them denied entry, and a "formal", where guys have to wear suits and gals in fancy dresses (often rented for the evening, as most teens don't have the budget.) Most of the attendees would be sophomores or their dates, with a sprinkling of adult chaperones. (Some students from other grades with no date might be allowed in under special circumstances at the discretion of the adults involved.)

I know what a 'semi-formal' is. ^^;

What I am missing is the cultural baggage. Is school dances common at all during the second year of high school (why second year, btw?)? Over here, such thing only happen during the graduation.

It depends on the school. In general, more prosperous school districts are likely to have more frequent school dances, simply because they can afford them. It's a way of trying to control the dating scene at least a little bit, and with luck provide a chance for socialization between different students who normally wouldn't mix. A poorer school might only have one "extra" dance besides senior prom, and the students expected to help fundraise for it.

A sophomore dance would be a fairly big event...for the sophomores; for many this will be the first date they actually dress up for—and for a few their first date ever. (And then there are those of us who never once had a date for the dance :-( ) So girls in general would indeed be fussing over their dresses, even if it's only semi-formal, and boys in general fussing about whether they'll have a drivers' license in time or get stuck having a parent drive. And both genders fussing about getting a decent date, especially if they already have someone they like.

-Recalls four separate ladies' choice dances.-

Schools Stateside have a lot of dances.

Attendance at them can be uneven.

No silly, he's digging a hole. In most, most, other mediums if you tried to do something like that it'd look very out of place. But in comics you can do stuff like that.

Oh, yeah!

I thought he was just being his usual slightly deformed self in those situations, but now i see the visual pun.

Heh, yeah. Comics can do that.

I have also picked that one up. Found amusing as well. This sort of thing is hardly exclusive to this comic, however.

Holy shit. Emily actually looks sad that Ash might like boys.

Why wouldn't she be sad about that? She likes Ash. If Ash suddenly became only into boys, she'd have to orchestrate another misfile to be with "him".

In other news, Ash is a goddamn moron.

Giving up happiness because of being afraid of not being happy is ridiculous. Idiotic, even.

Ash really needs to come to terms with the fact that he has no real control over whether or not he gets his old life back, and stop putting his happiness on hold indefinitely.

Look at Emily. She's pretty sure she doesn't want to go back because she's learned things and grown as a person. She's still having some trouble balancing her old identity with her new one, but overall she's accepted that this might be the way things are.

Heaven moves on Heaven time. An angel on a leave of absence might remain there for decades, if not centuries. A fuckup angel... moreso than others. Hell, perhaps helping Ash and Emily find each other might even be the good deed that gets angel-boy sent on home.

The long and the short of it is, Ash should just kiss the goddamn girl already.

Emily's and Ash's situations are very different, and Emily's would naturally be far easier to accept over time.

I agree that Ash is in the wrong, but not because he should accept his involuntary gender switch — rather, because he's being paranoid about his "real identity" getting erased if he lets himself be happy in spite of it. It's already pretty clear that he's still the same person he always was at heart, and by this point he should realise that allowing himself to be happy with Emily isn't going to change that.

Up until the this strip, I wasn't entirely sure Emily had feelings for Ash beyond a close friendship. I never really got an "in love with him" vibe from her. Maybe curious, maybe unsure, but not really physically attracted to another female.

I seem to have been wrong, though. ._.

[up] Me too. I wonder if this means we'll be seeing a resolution soon now that the main conflict has been made explict.

At the very least, it counts as progress in their relationship, which is more than we can say of the whole Master of the Mixed Message thing.

[up][up] I don't think we're close to a resolution. There's still that Supernatural-esqe angel sub-plot going on that hasn't been mentioned in a while. Unless that's been abandonded, the misfile won't be resolved without involving the angel plot.
