Congrats on the Moltres capture!

For extra laughs from Blissey, Trap-pass it to a Subseed user and laugh as it recovers enough to rebuild its sub every time the pink egg gets leeched!

I remember when Exeggutor was the best Pokémon in the game.

...I don't recall this ever being true. It hasn't been more than passable since Gen 2, and in Gen 1 both Alakazam and Mewtwo were better than it.

Exeggutor has some potential under the Sun, thanks to Chlorophyll and its rather respectable special attack power feeding a fast-charging Solar Beam spam.

True. It's never been a bad Pokemon... just it never was the best, either.

OK, nearly the best. You wanted Eggy on your team in RBY. Frankly, I wouldn't leave home without Eggy, Zam, or Tauros.

Okay, time to consult the hivemind:

Pimp... my... Pokemon!

...

... wait, that sounded really, really wrong. Funny, though. So I'll leave it in.

Anyways, I'm wanting to tune my lineups- I've got two at the moment, mostly based on Rule of Cool and what I liked at the moment. I've got two hard-and-fast rules on what I choose:

1) Must be Dual-Type. No real reason beyond thinning the massive herd of choices, and the fact that I like Dual Types.

2) Must not require dicking around with EVs to be competitive. I just can't be bothered to go that far under the hood.

Oh, and I don't usually bother with Legendaries, either, since... meh, y'know? Well, that and I haven't really liked a legendary since Gen II >.>

LINEUP ONE:

  • Empoleon
    • Nature: Timid
    • Ability: Torrent
    • Moves: Ice Beam, Surf, Hydro Cannon, Drill Peck

  • Houndoom
    • Nature: Docile
    • Ability: Flash Fire
    • Moves: Flamethrower, Faint Attack, Crunch, Fire Fang

  • Rotom (Standard)
    • Nature: Gentle
    • Ability: Levitate
    • Moves: Thunderbolt, Confuse Ray, Shadow Ball, Double Team

  • Medicham
    • Nature: Timid
    • Ability: Pure Power
    • Moves: Zen Headbutt, Hi Jump Kick, Force Palm, Mind Reader

  • Garchomp
    • Nature: Modest
    • Ability: Sand Veil
    • Moves: Dragon Claw, Dragon Rush, Sandstorm, Dig

  • Tropius
    • Nature: Careful
    • Ability: Solar Power
    • Moves: Solar Beam, Synthesis, Air Slash, Sunny Day

LINEUP TWO:

  • Charizard
    • Nature: Docile
    • Ability: Blaze
    • Moves: Dragon Rage, Wing Attack, Metal Claw, Flamethrower

  • Steelix
    • Nature: Lonely
    • Ability: Rock Head
    • Moves: Earthquake, Aqua Tail, Iron Head, Stone Edge

  • Gallade
    • Nature: Mild
    • Ability: Steadfast
    • Moves: Zen Headbutt, Psycho Cut, Swords Dance, Leaf Blade

  • Lanturn
    • Nature: Bold
    • Ability: Volt Absorb
    • Moves: Signal Beam, Thunderbolt, Thunder, Bubblebeam

  • Scyther
    • Nature: Careful
    • Ability: Technician
    • Moves: Double Team, Wing Attack, Slash, X-Scissor

  • Wevile
    • Nature: Quiet
    • Ability: Pressure
    • Moves: Faint Attack, Night Slash, Agility, Ice Punch

Note that pretty much none of these are anywhere near optimized at the moment, or even all that inter-supportive- they're just what I found nifty at the time, thought might be handy, or, in the case of the second lineup, what they've been getting as they levelled up, mostly, since I don't have them to where I'd like them, or even close- they're mostly around level 40-ish.

Quick Attack over Slash on your Scyther - with technician's boost, QA becomes just 10 power weaker than Slash, and has +1 priority, which is a powerful tool when people start abusing Choice Scarves and Baton-passed Agility and Speed Boost bonuses. Aerial Ace over Wing Attack, AA Scyther laughs at the Evasion Clause.

Your Charizard needs a direction to specialise in, a possible idea is to use 2 physical attacks (Dragon Claw + Earthquake, for example) bolstered by Swords Dance, and Overheat for the STAB, or Flare Blitz instead to further feed on the Swords Dance. Use a Platinum Move Tutor to get Fire Punch if Flare Blitz's recoil is a turnoff.

And I recommend you use it as a lead, to prevent Stealth Rock.

I love lanturne too; the use of both Bolt and Thunder is redundant though. I'd go with Surf, Charge Beam, Ice Beam, and/or Confuse Ray/Thunder Wave, my classical Lanturne set. Signal Beam is a cool move if you want to exploit an opponent's Bug weakness though, so it makes a nice alternate move.

Stacking paralysis and confusion is one of the most annoying ways I've found to exploit the Goddamned Bats phenomenon to my own end, so the Wave/Ray combo is quite workable if you find a chance to use it.

Cool trick time: Lanturne is a reliable counter to Togekiss and its Serene Grace trickery, because it eats up Thunder Wave and takes half damage from Air Slash, which would not have been very much to begin with due to its respectable special defense and impressive HP. Once you paralyse the 'Kiss with your own Thunder Wave, it will make it much harder for the flying egg to paraflinch you.

Lanturn is a damn underrated guy.

Shame Torterra rips it, though.

Torterra cannot switch in on Lanturne because of the threat of Ice Beam though. Meaty though it is, quad damage will still take a nice chunk of hp off it on the switch.

Lanturne has extra use in a weather team, because it can exploit rain for accurate Thunder spam, and it can also pick up Blizzard for use against Hail teams (at least versus their non-Ice types). Hidden Power Fire/Rock is a nice option to turn against enemy Ice-types too.

I like all these cool dual-types, the mix of resistances and weaknesses can give them some pretty cool tricks no other pokemon can exploit.

Random question.

Let's say I have a Pokemon in Gen 4 who I have given Hidden Power, but I don't know what type it is. What is the fewest number of battles (and exactly what battles) I would have to do to know for certain what type it is, no matter what type it is?

Get a Kecleon and enter a double Battle with your HP user as its partner.

HP is never Normal type, and it'll be revealed as a Ghost move if it doesn't affect your Kecleon.

Alternatively, use a good IV calculator (remember to keep track of your Effort Values if you use this method), which can reveal your Hidden Power and IVs at once if you key in a wide enough level range of stat-ups.

Without either method:

  1. Hit Girafarig to isolate Dark and Ghost.
  2. Hit a Shedinja to find Ghost, Fire, Dark, Flying, or Rock.
  3. Hit a Water Absorbing water/ground (like Wooper) to isolate Electric, Water and Grass.
  4. Hit a Dragon to isolate Ice and Dragon.
  5. Hit a Steel to isolate Poison.
  6. Hit a Koffing to find Psychic and Ground.

These 6 strikes will confirm most Hidden Powers.

When is it best to use an IV calc?

When you have no EVs yet (i.e., freshly caught/hatched) or after getting 510 total EVs?

And in all other circumstances will it tell you what type Kecleon has turned into?

Kecleon's Colour Change will reveal what your Hidden Power is. Of course, you'll need to hit your own Kecleon with Hidden Power to activate the Colour Change, so toughen up the Kecleon a bit first.

So... is my second lineup really that much stronger/sexier than my first lineup, or are people just commenting on what they know?

Not sure I want to go the Swords Dance route on my Charizard- I've already got a Sword-Dancing Gallade in the lineup, and, silly as it may sound, having another Sword-Dancer would feel kind of redundant- I also have Earthquake covered as a STAB move on my Steelix, so that's one more layer of redundancy :/

The Lanturn setup looks interesting, although I think I may want to hang on to the Signal Beam- it's a nasty little surprise for plant and psychic types. Although Ice Beam might be a worthy replacement, and seriously ruin the inevitable Garchomp's day... hmm.
