Honestly it's the Let's Plays. The entire popularity comes from how people react to it.
Its a game that shitty intentionally, with the attraction coming from it being funny to watch. Like Surgeon Simulator.

Its pretty unique gameplay concept for a horror game which was pretty fresh breath, plus it has intriguing mystery when you start connecting dots
