Well there's at least one Imperial Fist about. Maybe he's a Mauve Shirt?

The wikipedia article on it worries me now. It says the protagonist marines answer a distress signal with a Captain and a ten-man squad. That seems to indicate a minimal amount of large battle setpieces to better remind us how there is only war! Unless major worfing happens for the antagonists. sad

It doesn't look like a masterpiece to me.

I really want to see if, but I'd have to pay over $100 to see it and get a bunch of stuff I could live without. I can't afford that Games Workshop! I avoid your tabletop for a reason!

^Wellllll... I hear that the Dawn Of War games are actually rather reasonably priced. But that's probably because they're only supported by GW instead of actually made by them. Lol.

[up]Oh yeah, I've played 2. Love it very much. Can't wait for Relic's Space Marine. But I think that's being off-topic.

I'm really not impressed by the trailer. The action seems lame - a serious problem for anything based off 40K - and the CGI faces fall straight into the Uncanny Valley.

yeah I really hope the animations have been polished since the trailers. Because...yeah. It reminds me of fan made 40k movies.

The animators who did the intros for DOW and DOW 2. Come on, we need those guys.

Well, having just seen this, I have to say I enjoyed it very much. It's very much orientated towards the fans, with absolutely no watering-down whatsoever. The deliciously hammy voice acting and the visceral, crunchy combat scenes nail the 40k atmosphere perfectly.

That said, someone with no knowledge of 40k beforehand wouldn't enjoy it at all, and would probably just see a bunch of angry armoured guys fighting a bunch of other angry armoured guys.

The animation is better in some places than others and is about as good as the shoestring budget allowed. My major criticism is that the location for most of the film is on a dusty, empty planet with no character whatsoever, probably a side effect of concentrating the budget on the actual characters.

/extracts thread from the Warp

This sucked pretty hard. Even as a movie for the fans, it was just far too lacking. The plot was pretty obvious, the pacing was dull and the characters were very two-dimensional. It was visually unimpressive and even the battle sequences left a lot to be desired. To make matters worse, it was a very, very internal look at the Imperium; the only characters were Space Marines and a daemon.

Not that it makes much sense. The villains don't really have a motive other than MAIM KILL BURN and it fails pretty hard from a fluff perspective. Some of these Marines are going into their first battles, but how can that be? They're past Scout rank, which means they would've been deployed, tested and found suitable in combat. In addition, bolts and chainswords go through power armour just fine. I always assumed that power armour defeated such weapons except at the joints, or unless those weapons were applied with particular brutality.

Seeing this after playing Relic's Space Marine game, this film was a massive letdown. It was poor on all fronts, from fluff to plot to visuals to sound to dialogue to voice acting.
