Final Fantasy general

Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

my question is more if it's an interesting place to visit with relevant things to do.

having a big open world is kind of meaningless if it's all just empty unless you are going for some sort of deliberate artistic decision like shadow of the colossus.

Record Keeper:

Wow Juliep, that's a pretty comprensive post. Good job. :P

Personally, I just found out there's a whole bunch of 60-to-80 FF 7 Elite dungeons hidden after the 90+ ones, so I'm doing those. Now my parties can consistently handle anything that's under 80, can usually handle 80-to-90 dungeons and some parties (depending on how many synched characters/relics I have) can clear 90-to-100 dungeons. I'm pretty strong!

Also, I've thrown a bunch of eggs at Black Mage and White Mage, and now I have all their Record Materia! Too bad none of my actual characters is above 50, so nobody can use them. :P

I guess I'll spend the time before the next event clearing the Elites I've left behind.

Did you get Black Mage's second material? I think it's in a III dungeon, and it's the best one there is (gives back 1 use of each black magic after a battle).

Yeah, I've got it (the White Mage one from Macalania too). I just don't have any decent character that can use it yet. :P My only non-Core over-50 character is Tidus.

Oh, so it's of each Black Magic? That's great! It wasn't clearly worded in the description...

It'll probably have its share of secrets and dungeons and rare monsters scattered throughout like Skyrim.

[up][up] Yeah basically you get one free use of every black magic, every turn. Which is also why, combined with Quake, it is one of the best ways to clear out dungeons, especially those with rooms of 4, 5 or 6 monsters (there is also retaliate, but playing the entire game with retaliate can grow old fast).

My Quakers are Quistis and Vivi, but you can also use (that I know of) Rinoa, Maria or Tellah. Vanille and Terra are other options but if you started after I did you probably haven't them (since I don't have them either ^^).

I actually started at launch, but I skipped a couple of events... so I have Terra but I don't have Vanille. :P I'm trying to level up an A-team for each game, though, so I don't really have favorites.

[up][up]OK! I took the pragmatic approach: first getting an all-around powerful team (that would be Cloud-Fran-Sephiroth-Quistis-Yuna) that is able to go through most "normal" dungeons, then progressively adding new members to each roster. I try to mix things up so I don't end up with a team that crushes its realm, but no synergy whatsoever everywhere else.

Keeping every characters (well, almost every character because, for example, fuck you Gordon) on par has been somehow frustrating because everybody is talking about how good Record Materias are and I can't use them. On the other hand, I expect a big jump in power as all my characters reach level 50+ more or less at the same time. :P

I'm actually aware it's not a very good strategy, I'm just obsessive like that when it comes to not playing favorites in RP Gs. XD

So the difficulty in the X bonus battles (after Seymour at least) is actually pretty simple: do you have time to use Sentinel's Grimoire before the bosses screw you sideways? I had to restart twice the Biran & Yenke fight since Water Breath did 2k on everyone, and after that it was impossible to hold (Yenke mostly uses magic aoes that deal 2k without SG and 700 with). Then after I got them, the Sanctuary Keeper started the fight by Photon Wing: 3k on everyone + status effects. I tried it twice (second time he killed me while it had 10% left - because he slowed everyone and I had no time to heal) but I think I'll spare my nerves and let it go. All the tutorials I've seen either had incredibly honed black magic abilities, or far too much lvl 5 (or more) equipment with synergy.

I gave up on the +++rank fight versus that Sanctuary Guardian. Too much damage, and I give little care.

I'd say that with another 5* FFX weapon and Auron & Eiko at 65 it should be manageable, but I will have neither before the end of the event. And the rewards are...well, who can use 20 Giant scarletites anyway? Biran & Yenke was interesting to master at least.

I have been giving a look at the upcoming events of RK.

  • Next one will give another shot at Terra.
  • The one after will feature the first "Memory Crystal #2", Cloud's (along with Barret), which allows characters to level up to 80.
  • Coincidentally, "Super Soul Breaks" will appear - they will both give a new soul break to a character, but also increase this characters' stats permanently once it is mastered (+10 ATK, +10 MND...).
  • Between those two (probably), an orbs event should air, allowing to farm orbs of different types just like the Eggs/Materials/Gil event before. Also, 12 mithril should be obtainable from this event (3 in each of the four parts).
  • After that will be the Vanille/Hope event, so a good moment to use those bunches of 50 mithril to try and get a Relic staff (or magic weapon)
  • The events are going to become shorter from Cloud's on, with less steps and more Crystals/characters to unlock. Which probably means there will be less orbs to farm from them - however, the mithril count (10/event) seems to remain constant.
  • Gilgamesh should arrive mid-november - which is cool and practical since it seems he can equip Retaliate & Draw Fire.
  • Mid-December, there should be a large Memory Crystal event in order to unlock a couple of new #2 MC, and get the MC you couldn't unlock earlier.
  • Cid Highwind and Laguna are the most recent characters that became available in Japan. Which means that VIII's roster looks really complete (+him and Seifer). Of all the main playable characters from VII to XIII, only Cait Sith, Vincent, Freya and Basch have yet to be implemented.

Edit: someone ought to make a spoiler tag that is more handy when using lists.

Playing Bahamut Lagoon

... apparently Princess Yoyo is one of the most hated Square Females ever... by Japanese fans included which surprises me

I wonder why?

Thought Sendrak was a female and not a guy... His over world sprite having an hourglass figure just confused me... and whats suppose to be his mustache looks more like one of those sorceress mouth veils.

His battle sprite is much more detailed but... in this game your gonna be using the mages to bombard from long distance so outside of one or two attacks His battle sprite does show up much.

Sendak is in love with Byuu, so he fits into the "effeminate gay man" stereotype.

To keep spoilers to a minimum, Yoyo is rescued by Byuu, who is deeply in love with her, but she ends up rejecting him in favor of another man. People call that cuckolding. I call it refreshing.

The TV Tropes article says that its story was recycled for Final Fantasy X. I don't see it, since their stories are nothing at all like each other.

bahamut lagoon has amazing sprites and a gorgeous soundtrack but i haven't ever really put in too much time into it. the main battle theme will stay in your head for a long time.

I concur on the soundtrack. I kinda like its battle system too - reminds me of a prototypical Devil Survivor.

Funny thing is, I like Bahamut Lagoon's soundtrack but despise Devil Survivor's soundtrack. Easily the worst part of that game.

@FFRK

If you want to tackle the + challenge of the Ashe event, and that like me you decide to bring Aerith to get the Stop medals on Ghis: it appears that he becomes immune to Stop once he uses his protective spells (so, after taking some damage - for me it was 1/3 of his HP). The message displayed was "no effect" instead of the "miss" that usually appears when you fail to use a status but that the target is vulnerable to it.

So I strongly advise not to do like me and to use Seal Evil right away, which means using the first fight to fill Aerith's SB gauge. I lost six medals on that fight only - I managed to master because I didn't lose anything against the Walls afterwards, and I was lucky with the spells they used (they only used one Blindga who only got Aerith, never used Haste, and got slowed and blinded on the first or second try).

On a sidenote, Ashe is a slightly less powerful but much more versatile version of Vivi. She has the same (excellent) default SB and the ability to use 5* black magic, but also has WM & Support 3* (so you can use Diara). And her Record Materia is very useful for single fight bosses such as the ++ or +++ ones (it looks like Eiko's, increases MAG but lowers ATK instead of RES).

RK update: Terra is coming (back) soon, and this weekend, an "Orb Fest" event should start, that will also grand nice amounts of cash and XP, with the random chance to get 4 and 5* orbs from cactuars. Apparently, it will be by far the best way to burn your stamina while it is on (aside from completing the events, of course).
