Final Fantasy general

Go To

Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

If she hadn't, she would have been a Villain Protagonist.

Why is Locke any more of a protagonist than any other not-Terra-or-Celes character? The first Vector sequence?

Ties to Celes, basically. Like I said, he's like Rosa or Rinoa.

I sure said that!

He's forced into your party during several very important story sequences after his introduction. Most characters like Sabin, Gau, Cyan, etc can be ignored after you obtain them and get the option to switch up your party. The only exceptions are Edgar and Setzer and that's mostly because you need them to have three party members for the WOR.

edit: Technically Shadow gets forced into your party after his introduction but that's the first time you're required to use him. You could easily ignore him when you meet him in Doma and Kohlinghen.

It largely revolves around him wanting to stick around Terra and/or Celes due to his "must make amends for Rachel" issues, which gives him a lot of screen time because they have a lot. It's kind of interesting. He's sort of a Satellite Character revolving around someone who isn't even on-screen for much of the game.

The fact remains Venat is responsible for all the death and all the carnage of FFXII. You can argue she wasn't directly possessing Bergan but the clear implication is that Venat was somehow effecting him and while doing so he killed a ton of helpless refugees and priests.

That blood is on Venat's hands, or else she wouldn't have been in the scene at all.

Bergan: No. No, the power of manufacted nethicite is the power of Man! A weapon forged by his wisdom... who would challenge the gods themselves! A fitting blade for a true Dynast-King. Raithwall did but pretend the title... a cur begging nethicite scraps from his master's table. Hark! Ivalice hails her true Dynast-King, Vayne Solidor! He shall defy the will of the gods, and see the reins of History back in the hands of Man! His time is nigh! The new Ivalice holds no place for the name Dalmasca. The stain of Raithwall's blood... shall be washed clean from history's weave!

Translation: it is the prerogative of man to do whatever they please. Torture, rape, oppression - these are the traits of humanity and they are superior to enlightened guidance.

Vayne and Cid just pretty up what Began said. All they want is domination. If humes are ruled by the Occuria, what's left for them?

There's nothing to suggest Vayne was lying but there's also nothing to suggest he was telling the truth. Gabranth turned on him for this reason. Vayne was a power-mad lunatic and asshole and Larsa needed someone who would actually protect him .

Anastasis: To wield power against power. Truly the words of a hume-child.

A fitting condemnation of Vayne and Cid, as well as Ashe. Only Ashe never murdered anyone.

Also I was told the best part of FFVI was Edgar and Sabin. Or I guess their real names are Roni and Rene? I only know this because one of the writers for Xenogears, Soraya Saga, apparently wrote their characters and histories and that was said to be one of the best parts of VI's cast.

Edgar Roni Figaro and Sabin Rene Figaro. Middle names.

Their backstory is pretty nice, but one of VI's issues is that it's all told after about 2 flashback scenes.

Good ones, mind.

I do wonder what happens after 6 though. Does Sabin go off to live in the mountains while Edgar rules Figaro or do they try to rule it together?

On a more general note what about the rest of the world? Doma and the Empire are both gone now so the only major nation left is Figaro.

Like the end of the War of the Magi, humanity moves on and rebuilds I guess.

I'm just wondering who's in charge now. The towns are pretty scattered from each other so without a central power structure most of them will probably have a tough time rebuilding.

I suppose Figaro and the Returners will be helping with restoration efforts. There will probably be some form of conflict as to who controls the southern continent now.

How you can save Aeris in the FFVII remake.

Serious question: How would the plot even work with Aerith still alive? Being an Ancient, she seems to have the ability to stop more catastrophe in her "dead" state than she does alive. I believe she outright mentions not being able to hear the Planet too well at a number of points. So how would she stop Meteor? Or Geostigma?

Not being able to hear the planet was because of Midgar and pollution had pretty much killed that area, other areas she is able to hear it just fine.

Geostigma was something made up completely by the movie, it did not exist in the game itself like pretty much ALL the compilation.

Well, yeah, but I was looking at the effect her living would have on the compilation as a whole.

Geostigma has some basis in the original game. Ifalna mentions Jenoa originally approaching Cetra clans and "infecting" them. I could very well have been Geostigma, or something like it.

Jenova Cells are a pretty powerful plot device and the Compilation only enhanced that effect.

As for Aerith being alive...if the party killed Sephiroth faster, perhaps Holy could have done its job and destroyed Meteor, no Lifestream needed.

Doesn't the game imply that Holy would destroy human civilization?

They imply that there is a chance it would but it doesn't wind up happening.

#33723: Sep 5th 2015 at 7:45:20 PM

It doesn't because Aerith used the Lifestream to stop the Meteor. I got the distinct impression that if she hadn't done that Holy wouldn't have stopped at destroying Meteor.

Hashil Since: Aug, 2010
#33724: Sep 5th 2015 at 7:46:43 PM

The original implication was pretty ambiguous. The Compilation went ahead and said, "lol there is no way in hell we're making anything about wolf-lions", but I'd like believe it's very possible humanity was wiped out by Holy, too.

The Planet with No Name: "Yeah, sorry about the whole send-giant-monsters-to-destroy-civilization thing. Bad move, in retrospect. Here, I'll make it up for you by destroying Meteor. We cool?"

Square-Enix is likely writing this very thing as we speak.
