Thank you for the advice. I was in fact kind of curious which games were the fan favorites. I've heard that one game had a multi-generational story and that does sound pretty awesome.
But yeah, I think I intend to go in order. Just gonna go from I to IX. Simpler that way.
Interesting to hear about how hard II is.
I have a question though. I love video game music, to the extent that I place a good soundtrack as being more important than good gameplay. Which DQ has the best OST?
Good point, should have said that: this series has some real bullshit bosses.
Unfortunately, the series is not known for its music, it's all fairly forgettable outside the Overture. On its own, probably VIII has the "best" soundtrack since that's the one with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra performing, but I only remember the transitions and nothing of the songs themselves.

any plans to tackle the subseries/spinoffs after the main games?
particularly the DQ monsters and joker subseries
Uh....maybe? There were a couple released in English if I am remembering wiki right.
I dunno though. Are they worth it?There are a lot of spinoffs from what I saw. I guess it largely depends on how much I enjoy the series.

i think it will depend on that, yeah.
Yes and no. The Monsters subseries is a loving tribute to Toriyama's monster designs. It's a breeding/raising sim that's a fusion of Monster Rancher and Pokemon, without the disc inputs and old age system. If you love monster creation or the art, it's nice. Otherwise pass.
The exception to the rule IMHO is Caravan Heart, which was fan translated and has some wonderful tie-ins to other games in the series. The original DQM does as well, but the localizations missed each other since it references VI, which did not reach the West until the DS.
Other than that, Rocket Slime is hilarious. That's about as far as my spin off knowledge goes.

rocket slime was great >:D
shame the prequel nor the sequel made it overe here tho.
there are some other spinoffs, but i have next to no clue about any of them, except that swords has some nice character design.
Y'know, there's days when I vaguely wish DQ would get another artist in for the human characters- Toriyama's a skilled cartoonist and a fantastic creature designer but he's got maybe a dozen human designs he just recycles endlessly.
I sure said that!Okay so the other thing I value most in my JRP Gs is story and characters.
Which DQ game has the best story or characters in your guys' opinions?
I've been told the stories only get good come IV, although III has a "really good twist at the end, provided you beat the first two games."
IV-VIII. Strictly the best is V, with VII close behind if you're observant and can put implications together.
I really like III though.
so, on impulse, i decided to give dq3 another try
on a psp snes emulator this time (which i finally got working)
made a party of jester, cleric and theif; i plan to change the cleric to dealer when i find dharma shrine, the jester i can hopefully put up with until it turns into a sage, and i might swap out my thief for a warrior or fighter at some point
That 3Ds version of XI. the bottom screen 2D shenanigans...
It's so... Pointless yet cool! Who came up with this? How did they even pitch the idea?
The bottom screen view is entirely useless, yet it pleases me somehow! I am confuse!
Didja make sure they're all ladies with Sexy personalities?
I sure said that!i have no idea how the personalities work but i did manage to make the jester lady sexy
izzat why she gained 16 luck on the 2nd level or is that normal for a jester?
Personalities are modifiers to class stat gains- Sexy is the only one in the game that boosts every stat by some amount, and only women can have it.
Jester got slightly more luck than is typical too- It would've been more like 12 with a more neutral personality. Luck is basically the class' one good stat, but it's better than anything else by a wide margin both in and out of the class.

I sure said that!so much trouble trying to get a hero with a sexy personality
keep getting dirty instead
this flowchart isnt helpful :V
oh. wait.
in-game it says her personality is sexy
wut
why would it say dirty if it really meant sexy?! @_@ wasting my time

Mysterious Voice didn't account for the distinction between Sexy and its male counterpart, Dirty/Lewd- Which, for the record, isn't the same in how it affects stats.
I sure said that!which is funny, cuz it seems to make the distinction that a female character constantly thinks of guys,
which i doubt is what the male version of that text says
in other news, getting a sexy thief is apparantly random. and uncommon.
but with the magic of save states!

I believe Fighters, Warriors and Merchants can't have Sexy personalities unless they're the result of a class change or other outside aid, as an aside- There's a Garter to be found relatively early on, though, so that problem can be solved fast.
I sure said that! So, another question. FF is the only big JRPG series I've played and apparently FF and DQ are rivals in Japan. In fact, it was a thread comparing the two on another board that sparked my interest in the Dragon Quest series.
The thread was comparing these games, and asking which one you thought was superior:
Final Fantasy vs. Dragon Quest II
Final Fantasy II vs. Dragon Quest III
Final Fantasy III vs. Dragon Quest IV
Final Fantasy V vs. Dragon Quest V
Final Fantasy VI vs. Dragon Quest VI (one year off, FF predates)
Final Fantasy IX vs. Dragon Quest VII
Final Fantasy XII vs. Dragon Quest VIII (two years off, DQ predates)
Final Fantasy XIII vs. Dragon Quest IX
dunno if i'd really consider em rivals but i can see why people would
okay so
- i enjoyed DQII more than FFI, despite my inability to proceed after a certain point without cheats
- DQIII, no question. i hated FFII, tho the story and characters at least seemed interesting
- FFIII. i like DQIV but i honestly feel FFIII is a more enjoyable game to play (...then again, ive only played the ds remakes of both games, and if i played FFIII in its original form i might prefer DQIV.)
- FFV is really fun even in spite of the atb, but DQV is much, much better imo.
- FFVI has a stronger story than DQIV, but the atb system is a massive pain as always. i like DQVI but the story doesnt really seem cohesive, and the characters are pretty well defined but feel relatively poorly developed. as usual for DQ, gameplay is simple and solid.
- ive not really given either FFIX or DQVII a fair shake yet- i do know however that i enjoy both, but FFIX uses the ATB system so im going to weigh in favor of DQVII
- i've never played FFXII, but ive heard its a pretty fun game, with a decent story, albiet with an annoying protagonist. on the otherhand, i have played DQVIII (but only up to getting the boat) and i kinda, honestly, disliked it. all the same, i cant really weigh in here.
- DQIX. IX is among my favourites of the DQ series, while XIII i havent played but i have watched, and all three games are rather uninteresting and annoying.

FF and DQ aren't rivals because they're made by the same company and marketed usually towards different age groups.
It's a bit of an odd circumstance- Dragon Quest is stupidly popular in Japan, with FF remaining popular but firmly behind it. FF internationally is a smidge more popular overall than it is in Japan, but Dragon Quest has never done great outside of Japan, being decidedly more of a niche series.
I sure said that!
i think at some point in 2 i had to give up and cheat, because the final boss and probably earlier than that was just too troublesome to do legit.
but man dat final boss tho
so full of shit
