[up][up] Nice, someone else is watching Sengoku Youko! It's definitely been piling on more and more of those classic Mizukami twists.

As for Dungeon Meshi, I guess it's not as obvious in the anime, but despite the fooling around, Laios and his party have actually been descending at a very fast pace.

Oh, and Drug Gremlin evil grin Yes, indeed.

Gushing Over Magical Girls:... and a few times had really questionable BGM choices ...

Hidive's version wasn't fully uncensored. They got the version with uncensored video... but censored audio which is why it gets a little funky sometimes.

So the weird music was a censoring choice? Huh. I know the voices would get muted sometimes, but replacing music with unfitting tracks seems an odd choice.

I also like Sengoku Youku very much. It's one of the few (along with Frieren and Delicious) that I mentionned to coworkers who don't watch as much anime as I do.

Final Reactions:
MASHLE S2: The action and comedy are as usual: nice! This time around, it's the OP that really stuck.
Ragna Crimson: A heavy-hitter for action, signified by a fighting Ragna (cue the screaming).

Delicious in Dungeon: It's been a fun enough ride so far, but that whole thing about the party taking their sweet-ass time to reach Fallon never stopped bugging the hell out of me. Then it turns out she really did get ingested during all the dilly-dallying, good job folks.

She got ingested because the Dragon was moving around, something they had no reason to anticipate.

I absolutely cannot help but adore handsome 2D boys

Final Impressions

  • Ragna Crimson:: This wanted to coast on the Rule of Cool, but while the combat animations were decent, they weren't mindblowing, which allows the brain considerable room to ponder the many, many things this anime pulls out of its ass. Someone gets decapitated and they goddamn survive thanks to... electricity? Which is related to another issue with the show— the stakes feel almost random at times, because the story will shamelessly walk back on consequences whenever it feels like it. Ragna and Crimson are also not interesting protagonists to follow, the former being mostly a ball of rage that powers up from his angry shouting, and the latter being the primary provider of various thingamajigs that facilitate aforementioned ass-pulling. I was definitely thankful when other, more compelling characters joined the war against the dragons. Honestly the anime should have been about them instead. I almost want to read the manga now, because apparently the art is awesome enough to paper over the kinks in the story, and oh boy there's a lot to cover!
  • Solo Leveling: The webtoon was renowned for its incredible art, and it was always going to be the biggest hurdle for the adaptation. A-1 did the smart thing and didn't try to copy the manhwa 1:1. Instead of sleek and stylish splash shots, we get ferocious, explosive animation that invoke a comparable level of impact. The infamous scene where Jinwoo first mutters "Arise" was done wonderfully, too. I also appreciated that the story has been slightly tweaked in order to put more attention onto Jeju Island, which provides some nifty buildup for a future arc. A-1 knew the assignment, and props to them, they delivered the popcorn.
  • The Dangers In My Heart S2: I am usually an easy mark for coming-of-age romances, but something about BokuYaba prevents me from falling in love with it. I'm not entirely clear on why that is, because on taking a deep breath and reexamining the anime, it is objectively well-crafted. The attention to detail is apparent, down to the timing of the artistic karte cuts. I guess what throws me off is that while I like Yamada and Ichikawa together, I find them iffier as individuals. Yamada in particular can flit between astonishingly well written to artificially airheaded. But despite all that yapping, I did like the show overall, and I am considering taking to the manga so I can see all the juicy post-confession stuff.

Final Reactions:
Shangri-la Frontier: For a game fantasy, this is actually pretty good! The Wethermon fight was great, and seeing Sunraku go about ShanFro is rather exciting (even though I myself have not touched much games at all). Can't wait for S2 IN FALL!!
Gekkan Mousou Kagaku: Late to the ending, but I was finally able to catch up, and... Ok, I think it went off the rails the moment more furry transformations came up...

Final Impressions for Shangri-La Frontier:: SLF understands why gamers love the hobby. We love butting our heads against difficult opponents, hoarding the shiny loot, finding ways to cheese the system and immersing ourselves in a grand adventure. And man oh man, is the Frontier ever so grand and impossibly gigantic in scope. I'm legitimately interested in the lore of this vast, fantastical world. I wish Sunraku cared as much, but I do vibe with him in other ways, specifically the way he gets excited about exploring the mechanics and tackling the difficult challenges. His enthusiasm combined with his elite skills make him an absolute blast to watch. Another thing about this show is that it's got superb animation for just about all the fights, with the 5-episode battle against the superboss Wethermon being a back-to-back jaw-dropping spectacle. I'm already hungry for more SLF, so it's a good thing a second season has already been announced!

Metallic Rouge: It lost me at the latter half...
Sengoku Youko: Yonaoshi Kyoudai-hen: That last episode was TRAGIC, HOLY SHIT... And I thought Shakugan's sacrifice was the most fucked this could get! Part 2 is coming THIS SUMMER AND FALL!! Totally can't wait!!

Metallic Rouge was my guilty pleasure of the season and a total shistorm. They added even more twists last episode, killed a bunch of characters and ended everything with Bolivian Army Ending

Yeah, it was odd way to selerb rate Bones anniversary but very in vein of their later works.

P.S.: now Winter season is over for me. Let's see how Spring one goes.

Final Impressions

  • Sengoku Youko:: Truth be told, this first part was somewhat rough even in the manga, but the appeal of Mizukami's writing still shines through. He has a way of playing around with the usual action shonen tropes, and injecting moments of levity that pile onto the absurdity of the situations the characters find themselves in. I always did like how this leg of the story has Jinka powering up with sheer willpower, as protagonists often do... and it turns that, yes, overextending yourself is a bad idea. Talking about the quality of the adaptation itself, it could be better, especially the action scenes which can get illegible. However I'm just glad it wasn't thoroughly gutted like Biscuit Hammer was. Hopefully White Fox can continue delivering for the next part, because that's when things start really picking up.
  • Metallic Rouge: Outer space has never felt so cramped. Metallic Rouge positions itself as a buddy-cop adventure, but everyone important to the plot just up and waltzes right up to their faces. Not that it matters much because there's so many inconsistencies, there's more hole than plot. Like why the hell did Rouge not recognize who the Immortals were, did Gene not show her what the people she's supposed to be hunting looked like? What was the point of Junghardt dressing as a cloaked puppetmaster and running a flying circus? The world is incoherent. The relationship dynamics are a right mess too, it feels like the characters become close friends at the drop of a hat. At least the animation looks pretty? Not pretty enough to distract from the burning shambles... no bones about it, this is a huge, huuuge dud.

Anyone remembers when Tatsunoko made anniversary project and we got this? Not as messed up plot (sans the rushed ending) but animation got bad fast that time. At least Bones were consistent in this department (but messed with other ones).

Final Reactions:
Majo to Yajuu: The hook was that damn kiss in Episode 1, but somehow, the line broke, and I wasn't able to reach the end intact...
Bucchigiri?!: At least it was thematically sound, right? Thw series basically boils down to not running away and facing shit head on, and it was somehow able to make it bareable. Heck, I'm satisfied with Arajin finally repairing his bonds with Matakara! But somehow, it felt ... odd... Eh...

WINTER COUR 2024:
As a BL fan, this has been a hell of a season with Cherry Mahou being a breath of fresh air in what would have been yet another barren season (that's not even mentioning the Given: Hiiragi Mix movie!)! Thank heavens there's gonna be another BL anime coming in Spring! As for the rest, Sengoku Youko, High Card S2, Chiyu Mahou, Warumono-san, Ao no Exorcist S3, Dungeon Meshi, Himesama Goumon, and the 2nd halves of Kusuriya, Frieren, Ragna Crimson, and Undead Unluck were satisfying enough to be my picks for the cour!
The upcoming Spring cour definitely feels lesser in volume, but I hope to be satisfied with most of my picks, especially Wind Breaker!

Final Impressions for Bucchigiri?!: Had a colossal misfire with the main protagonist, whom they made an idiotic and unlikable simp (for an equally unlikable girl), and then the writers realized they kinda had to make the viewers root for him so they cram all his development in the last couple of episodes, which is too little too late, and all of Arajin’s accomplishments feel unearned. It’s a shame too because this anime had a colorful crew of delinquents and it would have been cool enough if all they did was butt heads. There weren’t a lot of fights but they were all great choreographically, only really lacking in the kayfabe.

Honestly I like Mahoro by the end.

An unlikeable jerk she may be, she’s blatantly upfront and honest about hating Arajins guts and never once gives him the time of day once he served his purpose.

By the end of the show I was legit thinking she’s too good for Arajin.

Edit: I’ve also been hearing that Mappas higher ups likely interfered in the making of Bucchigiri!? As well. Which would both explain a lot and reminds me of how this happened with Yuri on Ice as well(but managed to sneak in the gay as much as possible).

Oh, I'm late to the final reactions by like two weeks again. Whoopsie.

  • Frieren: A Journey's End was an absolutely magnificent masterpiece of a show. Hot off the heels of his last project Bocchi the Rock!, Keiichiro Saitou-san and the team over at Madhouse presented a story that completely exceeded all my expectations. There is a ton to unpack from this show, but at its core, it's a story about rememberance and embracing what you have, and I think the show pulled this off flawlessly. The characters are dynamic and interesting, with each and every one unique, their own person, even more minor characters such as Land and Sense. The camera work and visuals are drop-dead gorgeous, the story is compelling and gripping, the music is a work of art, and the voice acting is sublime. This anime broke MyAnimeList records for a very, very good reason! While Madhouse unfortunately has a habit of not picking up shows for a Season 2, it's my hope that we get to see Frieren and her story again in the future. A must-watch for both action-lovers and those who prefer the slower moments such as myself.
  • Delicious in Dungeon was a show with a premise that I enjoyed a lot. Cooking food (and good-looking food at that!) created from dungeon monsters is such an interesting and fascinating thing to unpack, and I'll admit that some of those food made my mouth water at times. But the great thing about Dunmeshi is that the food is only half the show. The other half are the amazing character interactions, the tense story, and the amazing visuals. The music is also praiseworthy, too. We have a second cour for the Spring season, so I'll leave it at that for now, but this is a show that's worth checking out for the nerds out there.
  • I don't have much to say about Urusei Yatsura other than it's mostly the same, turn-your-brain-off, outdated comedy that the first season had. I say mostly because this time, it actually has memorable character moments, especially showing how the bond between Ataru and Lum is tightening. Turns out they really do love each other. Other episodes were really sweet, too. I'm hoping we get more of these.
  • Solo Leveling was also pretty good. Big fan of the animation and fight scenes. I also liked the slower moments, which I know fans have come to hate, but personally I liked the exposition that makes up the show. Seeing the fabled Arise scene was a treat. For the shallow "weakest-guy-becomes-strongest" premise that it is, it wasn't half bad.

Didn't watch much this season, but the few shows I did watch I genuinely enjoyed. See you nex-uhh, this season!

Clear prop!

Between Frieren and Dungeon Meshi, it has been a great time for fantasy fans.

Both the anime and manga of Gushing Over Magical Girls are being cut from the wiki as per Content Policy discussion.

At this point we'd normally lock any dedicated forum thread for the work. As this thread covers the whole winter season, we'd ask that this particular anime is no longer discussed here.

Any further posts about it may potentially be thumped.

Thanks!

Works getting cut from the wiki means you can't even talk about them? Good to know.

Not always, but if they're cut under the content policy - e.g. due to porn, or sexual content including underage characters - then we don't really want that on the forums either.
