Surprised no one died during the Garuda attack.

[up] Yeah, some of those chaps looked pretty dead to me. Maybe wizards and witches are just built tough in this verse.

Anyway, episode 5, where it’s revealed that the one who made Katie run was just some prankster, while the real antagonist is an activist who needs to reevaluate what a right is. Probably also needs to learn what empathy is, too. Would save her the effort of digging into brainstems. Nanao and Oliver can clearly punch above their weight but will they really be able to take down a 4th year? Moral of the story is, these senpai can’t be trusted.

Oliver, you also owe Nanao a kiss. Chela also continues to be my favorite of the group, she’s just on top of everything.

Mages in this setting basically are built different, yeah. If something doesn't result in decapitation, the destruction of your brain, or massive exsanguination, a mage can probably survive it with healing magic.

Anyway, if we're lucky we're going to see something pretty cool next week.

[up] Figured as much. Evisceration and amputation would be painful but with healing magic, as long as you stay alive you can mend and stitch back your guts. The fact that Kimberly still manages to cull 20% of its student population is wild, maybe they need to do a better job at reining in the upperclassmen haha.

Also curious to know more about Oliver’s backstory. He’s definitely being hinted to secretly belong to a powerful, famous clan.

Don’t think the teachers are doing anything any favors towards that either. It’s kinda funny how Oliver has a shadow seemingly for his protection, but that really hasn’t meant much.

On another note, his cousin’s hair tufts keeps making me think she has animal ears.

[up][up][up][up]Oh yeah, Chela is the best girl. And despite teasing Oliver she does not seem to be romantically interested.

I wonder if we are on vol. 2 already or it is still a vol. 1 of the novels?

We should be wrapping up volume 1 next week. It looks like we're paced to go to the end of volume 3, since 2 and 3 are both shorter and a bit more battle-heavy than volume 1.

It's been fun.

So, big reveales this time.

Nanao owns 7th spellblade(which allows her to strike faster than light?), and Oliver inherited the 4th one(which allows him to calculate all future possibilities on demand, but no more that twice in a row or it will kill him).

They also explained why Oliver came to Kimberly, though, it was quite of obvious already.

Also, looks like there will be 13 eps + 2 unaired ones (I wonder if they will be BD only or we'll see them aired, just not on TV).

[up]Yeah. 2 eps won't be aired on TV because timeslots.

Yes, many things happened in episode 6.

So where will they show up?

[up] No info yet. Either BD-only or they will be streamed at a later date.

Something I'm a bit confused about: why does there seem to be an entire cult dedicated to helping Oliver in getting his revenge on Chloe's killers?

@Kaiseror: As of the books currently released in English, that's still not clear. I could make some guesses, but it would cover material that won't be adapted by the anime. For more detail, I think the upcoming volume 9 goes more into the backstory around that whole thing.

It's been fun.

Episode 6: Overall feels rushed. Some heavy reveals that didn't get the room to breathe, and became less impactful as a result. But! I still liked it overall.

More specific notes:

  • This show continues to delight me with its fight scenes. Huge fan of Oliver using relatively low-level spells in unorthodox ways to catch the enemy off guard. Nanao also creates a new spellblade on the spot, which handily explains where the title of the anime comes from, as well as showing that Oliver does know more about the spellblades than he let on. Nanao's spellblade itself is of course awesome, cutting through space-time itself.
  • Katie pleasantly surprised me by fully accepting that Kimberly is filled with jerks and deciding she'll continue the resistance. She won't the assholes get her down. This place will be kinder by the time she graduates, she declares. And I am rooting for her every step of the way. I hope we see her interact with Miligan again.
  • The story formally reveals itself: Oliver is at Kimberly specifically to seek revenge against some of the professors, whom are complicit in killing his mother. I thought that Grenville went down a little too easily, but I guess that's the lethality of a spellblade for you. It suits Oliver (or shall I say, Noll) well, too— it's like some form of hyper-analysis that lets him effectively pick a future out of thousands of possibilities. Wicked!
  • The torture was ice cold. Glad that the show did not hold back on that.

[up][up][up] Well, it seems like spellblades can be passed down, and such a thing would obviously be high value to magic families. Killing off a person capable of using a spellblade would be tantamount to destroying the value of a clan. Kind of like destroying a family's Magic Crest in the Fate series.

Hey, so how many people here read the light novel? Because I just found the first volume in my local bookstore.

Seems like it's the only officially translated/released volume in my country so far, but if it's good I'm still considering getting it.

I read the light novels in English and they're the reason I love the series. Highly recommend picking them up, either now or after the anime.

It's been fun.

All righty then, I gotta snatch the volume right now before anyone else in the bookstore has the same idea. [lol]

Killing off Grenville and the reveal that Oliver had all these followers feels like it should have come much later in the series.

It's the end of the first light novel volume, so this is about where it would have been. I do think some scenes should have been given more room to breathe, but in terms of actual content there isn't that much else they could have adapted first.

It's been fun.

Really hoping McFather wasn’t involved with the murder of Oliver’s mother, Chela is a important part of the group and I would hate something disrupting that.

he was not among the people Oliver named last episode. Same with the fencing instructor.

So, each sex has specific affinities. And so being a reversi actually gives you a bit of advantage. Interesting.

True, but he did show up in a meeting between the remaining six. Just concerned that even if he wasn’t directly involved with Chloe’s torture and murder he might have a connection to what happened.
