However I've seen cases where the one being punished performs as ordered, then KEEPS GOING beyond what they've been ordered to do. Maybe they're stubborn, or protesting, or showing off, but eventually the instructor tells them to stop. The student refuses to do so, and eventually collapses.
The instructor then either a) admits that was the point, a test of their limits, or b) gets even more pissed off at them for disobeying orders. This can often be a turning point in their relationship, for better or worse.
