Trope Co. Trope of the Week is an old trope with a very messy examples page. The description says the trope is about sponsored segments in sports broadcasts. Many of the examples are these. Some are about general sports sponsorships. Some are about sponsored segments outside of sports.

The description adds "But [hilight reels are] not the only thing. You can see unusual executive-induced naming patterns in anything from trophies to arenas. Sometimes, the event itself will be sporting the name of a corporation, but in those cases, people usually drop the sponsor's name in casual conversation." The "sponsorship of a physical object or location related to sports" is also a popular type of example. The weird phrasing in that part makes me think it was added to the description later. Sponsoring an arena, trophy, or team seems to be a different idea than sponsoring a segment of a broadcast. This is a popular type of entry. Stadiums or trophies aren't works in their own right.

On the opposite side of the coin, there are sponsored segments (or whole shows) that aren't related to sports. These seem to be more in keeping with the original idea, but are the least common on the current page.

I was planning on bringing this to the repair shop to change the deprecated name, but I know there's a long wait. The trope page is full of long-winded entries and complaining right now, but those issues are fixable. I'd like to fix what I can.

The oldest copy of the page in the Internet Archive has the phrasing you think was awkwardly worded and inserted later.

Thank you. I guess it was a different time...

It looks like physical sponsorships are on the page archive too.
