Cassette Craze is a nifty little trope about characters recording exposition in analogue formats. However, it's also a trope from the wiki's early days and I have some concerns about it:

  • The description states that a futuristic version of the trope is Captain's Log, which is inaccurate; that trope is specifically about voiceovers of diary/journal entries and isn't restricted to works set in the future.
  • The trope's scope is unclear: the description and name suggest the trope is specifically about monologues on cassette tapes, but the on-page examples alone include other kinds of audio recordings (e.g. wax cylinder phonographs, dictaphones, sci-fi recording devices).
  • In addition to the name possibly being too restrictive, it doesn't mention anything about the exposition aspect of the trope.

Would it make sense to add this to Tropes Needing TRS?

"My job here is done." "But you didn't do anything."

You are right that Captain's Log is about voiceovers from a device while Cassette Craze is about the actual recordings. I don't mind the wider scope of including any analog device. Tropes are flexible. IMO, this can be solved without a trip to TRS.

It seems to be about these messages being recorded on a device, and I think a rename would help there. I think the title is a joke on EVERYONE using a cassette tape to deliver exposition, even if it doesn't seem worthy to record... which seems to be its own thing.
