Final Reactions: Ryman's Club

Easily the best sports anime of the cour! There was a sense of unity throughout the entire series, and each character stood out and had a story to tell from all the badminton players and teams to the other corporates of SunBev in the background to even that strict bastard who wished to take down the SunBev Badminton Team! They were definitely able to balance both the action of badminton and the drama of the workplace while also keeping me on my toes every episode! It's abundantly clear that I had fun watching this and that this is a definite recommendation for sports anime people!

WINTER COUR 2022:
This was a cour where I had to endure waves of my own Opinion Myopia. It sure felt lonely watching all these anime as I couldn't seem to enjoy it with others as much as I wished. Nevertheless, the selections were still enjoyable. I absolutely loved SasaMiya, and I wish it gets the accolades it deserves! I liked Orient to the point of catching up to the manga, and I wish it didn't get trashed by a lot of people. Sabikui Bisco was a hidden treat, Ryman's Club was an unexpected savory dish, Tokyo 24-ku got me to revisit ethics, the list goes on and on. It was lonely, but it was still fun! The loneliness might continue through Spring (save for the Spy x Family hype), but hopefully I can overcome it...

Final Impressions

  • Ryman’s Club: Finally managed to finish it. What sets this show apart is the salaryman aspect, in particular how the badminton nut Shiratori expands his horizons by learning to care about non-badminton things, which ends up helping him become better at the sport. The matches are well-animated and there’s a decent amount of kayfabe, though the tactics used are basic. Definitely not the sort of play you’d expect from a pro league. This show really is more about Shiratori’s development into becoming a more well-rounded person and honestly, that was pretty alright.

Since CUE! is still ongoing at EP 15, should I still post it here or in Spring 2022 thread?

So I just heard the couple clips of My Dress Up Darling English dub. I am familiar with Amanda Lee, so her voicing Marin really got my curiosity.

But goddamn.

I was also really impressed by whoever voiced Gojo.

The dub is damn fine. [tup]

I have a bad habit of dragging my feet finishing off an anime, especially when its only one season so far. Its like my brain doesn't want it to be over, you know?

This is to say, I only just got around to finishing My Dress-Up Darling. Goddamn, this show was delightful. The relationship between Marin and Wakana is infectiously sweet, and her helping Wakana out of his shell allowed him to help others out of their's, like Juju's sister. And the animation and choreography through the whole show was wonderful. I love the moment in episode 11 where they realize the near-intimate situation they've gotten themselves into, panicking first but then starting to relax and almost give into it. Everything moves super slow and quiet, and they slowly draw closer... And then the phone rings snapping them out of it. So good, one of my favorite scenes of the show. But all of the romance-building scenes are very sweet.

The ending though... Super sweet, but its the kind of ending that teases you perfectly to want more. This is exactly what I was talking about at the top of this post. And yeah, obviously I could read the manga, and maybe I will, but I honestly tend not to enjoy manga as much as anime. So I'll be here praying for a Season 2.

[up] Incidentally, sub or dub? I've been watching the sub so far, but I kind of like what I've heard of the dub.

I like both, but I eventually switched over to the dub mainly. I pick up on Marin's nuances more then I did in the sub, and I enjoy Amalee's delivery in general. And Wakana's VA, Paul Dateh, does a fantastic job as well. And I don't mean in a "for his first major role" kind of way, I would say he shows himself to be a remarkable talent comparable to mainstays already.

Are we talking about My Dress-up Darling dub? Because I want to reiterate just how much I love it.

In this clip particular, both Marin and Gojo's lines at 0:20 mark are just...god, just perfect. I even prefer that version of the same scene over the sub, actually. [lol]

Mmhmm. I agree. I mentioned the acting before, but the script is really well done too. Marin uses a lot of slang and meme-ish language (Like the "That was brave, son" in the clip you posted) that I think fits her well. Or at the least, the script and Amalee's delivery together make it fit well.

Damn, alright, I'll give it a shot. I really liked Marin's Japanese voice, but this sounds too good to miss out on.

Continuing on the subject of My Dress up Darling dub:

Like, what the hell. One note, nameless extra shouldn't have lines and delivery this good. She only had about thirty seconds of screentime and yet almost every single line coming out of her is a meme-worthy gem. [lol]
