[up][up][up] Curious to know what the unfortunate incident is? Would love to learn additional context.

[up] Of course Gagumber did act like a crappy dad in that scene, but the annoying part is as you said, no one thinks to call Memempu out on her stupid plans, while everyone is perfectly willing to pile on Gagumber.

Regardless I think Memempu is a terrible character. The story sets up these opportunities for her development but these do not push through.

  • Takt.op Destiny: Well for a mobile game advertisement, it's not the worst thing out there? Still feels weird that music in general is banned, but there seems to be absolutely no issue of giant monsters attacking you if you... play music in a soundproofed room? Even a garage is sufficient? At least the animation was nice. Needed more Lenny and Titan.

  • Scarlet Nexus: And this... was fine I guess? I think I stopped paying a whole lot of attention halfway through, expecting this to just be 1 cour anyway. So I guess I missed what made that blonde girl so important in the grand scheme of things. Well, I'm sure I'll pay more attention when I actually play the game.

  • Sakugan: NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY~~~ I enjoyed this a fair bit, even if I was expecting a bit more kaiju battling than... literally just the one. I also don't agree that Memenpu's a terrible character at all - if anything, that one episode had her act massively OOC, otherwise she and Gagumber just seem to like bickering. Also it suddenly decides to have a plot at the very end of the show when there's no actual time for it, because what even is writing? Would not have minded this being 2 cour if it meant having time for the plot to exist.

  • Selection Project: Cute girls and some decent songs, with a plot point I was surprised to see used again in an idol show. The more you think about the SP in-universe show, the more strange it seems though. The thing about the minimum yells was mentioned, but the show itself seems to have a lot of viewers, so tons of fans would have watched the girls be disqualified... and then basically none of them followed up on their attempt to be an indie idol group at all? What, was the entire viewerbase also deeply offended about them not wanting to kick two people out the game? But, you know, aside from that it was alright!

  • Taishou Otome Otogibanashi: So I guess I stuck with this after all. It's a cute and fluffy show most of the time, and as much as Tamahiko irritated me in the first half, it's kind of hard to blame him for how he ended up, given how inexplicably shitty his father was. It also felt like they kind of glossed over Ryo being terrible to Tamahiko and Yuzu up until the last episode for some reason? But yeah, other than that, it was a mostly pleasant experience, in the end.

⬆️⬆️ I'm referring to Mana Nagase's VA Sayaka Kanda from Idoly Pride who died in attempted suicide right after airing SelePro's Episode 12.

[up] Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.

[up][up] Definitely feel like Scarlet Nexus is better played than watched. Anyway if the blond girl you’re talking about is Alice then you could say almost the entire plot was because of Karen trying to find a timeline where she survives.

Selection Project had a lot of niggles in its story but otherwise does okay on the girls being idols front.

As for Memempu, we’ll just have to disagree on that. Sakugan definitely would have benefited from a longer runtime though, because maybe that way it could have had the room to make sense of its jumbled plot points.

And yeah, takt OP is funny, humanity apparently forgot that soundproofing is a thing.

I could have wait till tomorrow to post the next batch, but most of the shows are ending already.

Sekai Saikou no Ansatsusha, Isekai Kizoku ni Tensei suru was good enough for me to think of purchasing the L Ns. T He priotagionist was proactive, logical and not super heroic. And I liked all of the girls (thougt my type was Dia). I know, a lot of people found it pretty average, but I personally liked it way more than most of the isekais I watched (besided Mondaiji and NGNL, probably). My only complaint is pretty bad 3D where it was used. If we ever get S2 I hope for better production. If not 1 I'll try to read the novels.

Takt Op. Destiny was actully decent as a mobile game adaptation. It went the prequel route instead of trying to adapt the game plot and did not focus on to many characters. I also liked the action, general atmosphere and use of classical music. Though,. in general it was pretty average because itr was decent while they tried to make a road-movie but went to the super generic when the main plot surfaced.

I also watched Fate/Grand Carnival (eps. 3-4 came out this season). But I won't syy much. It was great, but most of the jokes are to meta so you need to be FGO player to get them.

X4[up]

They skipped a bunch of stuff including the final arc(possible OVA or movie) which ties things together. The stuff with Ryo was kind of trimmed down which was a shame(fairly big character moment in the manga). All in all, it was an incredibly good adaption and I'm really glad it happened(manga actually made it into the Top 50 or Top 20 which for a manga that ended in 2016 is pretty damn impressive).

Final Reactions: 86 2nd cour

Technically, the show isn't ending until the last two episodes air by March 12 and 19, but since Winter Cour's wrapping up, I must go and say my thoughts on this now.
As much as I want to say how much of an emotional trainwreck this has been, I have to note that the unexpected delays kinda mellowed the impact a bit. Nevertheless, they still delivered as though it was without delay. Kudos, but I guess I'll have to rewatch this at some point so I can get everything...

Overall Impressions

  • Build Divide: Haven’t liked a card-game this much since Yu-Gi-Oh. I like that it goes ham on treating the titular card game as Serious Business to the point it’s the central facet of the cyberspace society. It helps that the protagonist is an entertainingly edgelord sourpuss. The matches themselves have more animation than you’d expect (in fact I question— but appreciate— the effort) and are relatively easy to follow. The show definitely misses the mark on proper worldbuilding; there are filler episodes that I feel could have been tweaked to provide lore instead. However, given that this entire show is only the first part of a series I’m willing to cut it some slack. Overall more entertaining than I expected, despite being as flawed as expected.
  • My Senpai Is Annoying: Not annoying at all. Leave it to Doga Kobo to inject oodles of personality into an otherwise standard work. It’s one of those rom com anime where I’m way more invested in the beta couple compared to the main couple, and to my delight they do get a significant amount of the screentime.

Final Reactions: Gyakuten Sekai no Denchi Shoujo

Over the top with heart-racing segments peppered in. A glorious (well, IMO) celebration of current Japanese pop culture and how it inspires in spite of the tragedies of the real world. Overall, it was pretty neat to the point I would want to see a continuation; although, I doubt how likely that would be...

  • My Senpai is Annoying: Well that was cute as hell. Futaba and Takeda are fun together, and the supporting cast are a lot of fun, too. I have no real complaints here, would love to see more, please provide, Doga Kobo.

  • Shikizakura: It was okay. The CG work was pretty good, but otherwise not all that memorable a show in the end. Which is a shame, because using oni as powered suits is kind of neat.

  • Cardfight Vanguard overDress S2: It's weird how this turned into a card game anime in the last few episodes, wonder why they did that. This was pretty enjoyable, though I shudder to think what the state of the actual game is like these days. Surely "plus 1 million ATK plus every Trigger effect at once" is an anime-only thing, right? Even if it is, the game has clearly long since progressed past a 20000 attacker being an unbeatable behemoth of a unit. Oh right, the show. Uh... screw Masanori, he's a dick.

  • Rumble Garandoll: Another one that's fine, I guess? Honestly, the premise sounds way whackier than what we actually got. There's a lot of really silly elements, but they feel weirdly disconnected from the tone of the show? It didn't really turn out bad, but it's probably not something you recommend unless you have literally no other mecha show left to watch that isn't objectively awful.

So that's... three shows left to finish this week, everything else is a long runner. Speaking of, Dragon Quest was pretty much the best show this season, because good old fashioned shonen battle stuff is tough to beat, and Demon Slayer has only just started its next arc for real.

Cause it is a card fight anime?

Granted I hear Overdress puts characters first over a card fight per episode.

Yeah. I haven't seen the last episode of this season yet and I can only compare Overdress to the first couple arcs of the reboot but Overdress as a whole is more character focused than battle focused.

That was a joke, I know it's a card game show. It just barely gets much focus in overDress.

[up] x 4 Dragon Quest is indeed fantastic. Also agreed that Garanndoll could have really gone ham with its premise. More on that below.

Overall Impressions

  • Kyoukai Senki: A mecha anime that feels like it wandered in from the early 2000s, which is by no means a bad thing. As I've mentioned before, it cobbles together parts from other mecha anime, especially other Sunrise works. Some of those parts, like the fully hand-drawn mecha fights, are great to have, while others like the "poor bullied Japan" trope feels like they should have been scrapped. The characters are largely forgettable rehashes of personalities you've seen elsewhere. I do appreciate that a large number of the antagonists aren't the pure evil, cackling bully kind, which would have been easier to do given the aforementioned "poor bullied Japan" trope. The plot progression is fairly typical, comprised of battles against the various oppressors, with laid-back moments of R&R and setting development inserted between them. Interesting how the first season ends on the MC and his AI sidekick seemingly dying. You'd think they'll show their survival in The Stinger... but nope, the one that shows up is the feral monster that the MC gave his life to defeat! I will honestly be impressed if they let Amou's death stick because there's like a 1% chance of that happening.
  • Rumble Garanndoll: I like eccentric elevator pitches, and "mecha powered by otaku culture" is definitely one of them. However, I don't think the show goes as hard on the premise as it could, which is unfortunate because it's at its best when reveling in the kookiness of, say, an underground otaku goods market becoming a roguelite dungeon. The art style is colorful and pleasing. The MC Hosomichi and his gaggle of Battery Girls receive a good amount of character development, and they are quite endearing. Problem is, they spend over two-thirds of the show on that, especially Hosomichi's insecurities, which is aggravating because this show does not do drama well. This leaves around 3-4 episodes for everything else, which means that the villains barely get fleshed out, and they rush through several seemingly important plot points, like why parallel-world Japan is invading in the first place. Despite the wasted potential, I would still say this is the most fun mecha anime I've watched this season, and perfect for unwinding with.

Final Reactions: Blue Period

It was a pretty beautiful anime on the fine arts. I loved Yatora and his journey getting into Geidai. However, if the general reaction (at least, the ones I heard) is to be believed, then Blue Period should've never had an adaptation at all, and the manga should be some sort of bible. That general reaction kinda soured my experience watching this, but I cannot really respond to that since I'm an anime-only. If there's a next season coming for this (which I really hope will come), I'll read the manga.

That "general reaction" is definitely unwarranted. The anime being able to play with color alone makes it worthwhile, even if it is abridged. Like many adaptations, it's complimentary rather than superseding. Plus the OP and ED are arguably the best of the season.

While I dropped the anime, from what I watched, the quality was pretty decent. Not an adaptation to be ashamed of.

I think the problem with highly regarded mangas is that people want the quality to be better or at least on the same level as the source. Blue period's adaptation was mostly just okay, it's not an absolute Trainwreck like the kumo anime but if you're not anime only it'll probably not feel that worth it.

I dropped the toilet bound hanako-kun anime halfway through for similar reasons, the anime did a wonderful job mimicking the manga's colouring but it was ultimately barely actually animated and I wasn't able to enjoy it as much after a point.

Final Reactions: Saihate no Paladin

Given that I expected this to be as emotional as Fumetsu no Anata e, I was clearly mistaken especially at the episodes before EP 11; nevertheless, it was pretty decent (well, for an origin story). Since there'll be a second season of this, I'm hoping that it'll give more, whatever that could be.

To Fall Cour 2021:
Compared to Summer 2021, this was pretty relaxing. Props to Mieruko-chan for getting me shrieking, Sugu Shinu for getting me laughing my ass off, Denchi Shoujo for reaffirming my lifestyle, and Ousama Ranking for getting me super invested in best boi Bojji! I may have conceded to myself that in my book, no cour would ever beat Fall 2020, but I'm sure I'll hit another relative maxima soon! Winter 2022 is just around the corner...

The season ended at last (I won't count Blade Runner as it airs off season sort of and I'll post my impressions regarding 86 once it ends) so some final impressions and a couple of New Year TV specials added to the mix.

Senpai ga Uzai Kouhai no Hanashi was a curte and mostly funny litte officer romance series but as most of such stories it suffers from the authors desire to drag the romance for as long as possible even for beta couples. So I am a bit disappointed again and is not hooked enopugh to read the manga.

I actually liked Kaginado more than recent Isekai Quartet. Mainly because it put much motre effort to play off interactions of the characters from different franchises. I am also sure that they will not run out of jokes in S2. Though, I get why a lot of people ignored or dropped it. It has to much meta-jokes that are easy to miss if you are not familliar with all featured titles. And some eps had a pretty specific humor (some people were turned off by ep1 and parts with male fanservidse, otheras gotr offended about paroding of Key dramatic moments) but I defuinitely want more.

Shin no Nakama ja Nai to Yuusha no Party wo Oidasareta node, Henkyou de Slow Life suru Koto ni Shimashita was a mixed bag. the So L part was cutre, the romance was ghood and actually progressed a lot, and even the parts related to intrigues were interesting. But the production was lower than average and the main plot related to war with demons and worlds history was super cliche and facepalm worthy. The adaoptation also had issues with pacing (first half was super slow, while the second half jumped between being super slow and pretty rushed). All in all uit was not a bad series buit it's hard to say who it was aimed for. Fans of slow-life fantasy were probably disappointed with the main plot while fans of action fantasy were probably bored with So L parts.

I read Roll Over and Die which uses a similar premise and some plot points but it is way more consistent (though, the romance there is way slower as general public is not keen of GL). So I don't see the reason why should I get interested in this one.

Saihate no Paladin was as I heard it will be. On a minus side the production is also lower than acverage and it had some pacing issues (plus I am not sure why the author decided top add yaoi-bait). But it is a ratre case of anime fantasy done right in a modern world thare all such titles have a setting that reminds JRPG more than an actual fantasy. Plus it was great to see a lot of characters who are not dumb, illogocal, impulsive or one-dimensional. Even Will and Mmenel despite their issues behaved rational most of the time. Even the stupid drama at the end was resolved the best way. So I will watch S2 despite all of my nitpicking and I wish the author to deal with his anxiety issues and continue writing.

General impressions. All in all this season was odd for me. I watched like twice more series than lsast couple of sesonms (and even more if you cvount the ones I put on hold/plan to watch later and shorts). But there was nothing that really stood out for me. The best one was probabnly 86 but it suffered from production slips so I still cannot get the final impression about it. And it had its downs too. And Windter 2022 looks pretty bleak for njow. There are like 4-5 series I am interested in but nothing that can potentially surprise me. I hope to be wrong here, but less to watch mens more time to catch up with some seriers I missed/holded or with other things.

And a couple of NY specials to wrap things up.

Sorairo Utility it was cuite little spocon about the kind of sport that rarelly gets in anime. To bad despite authors teasing the full series, they only managed to do this special. Because the general premise was more for me than Birdy Wing which will clearly exploit the typical shounen cliches.

Lord El-Melloi II Sei no Jikenbo: Rail Zeppelin Grace Note - Tokubetsu-hen was a great comeback. It was nice to see a new complete short-story with decent plot. And they brought my favourite Type Moon character (Touko) in the mix. I won't see Yaga Kimi sequel ever, so I hope Trioyca at least will make more of Case Files in the future. Also, it was a good tease before Maho Yo movie comes out.

Saihate no Paladin was my last anime from this season.

I'm pretty disappointed with it really. It's a shame it was such a lackluster adaption. It's cool it got a second season though! I'll be watching it and hopefully they do a better job with the animation next time.

It did get me to read the Light Novels though. Which I enjoyed

Yeah, pretty much nothing of what I've heard is in Paladin's favor. It's fun at least seeing Will and Meneldor as romantic; aside from that there isn't too much to recommend it.

It's been fun.

Overall Impressions

  • Kaginado: Loads of fun, especially if you understand the references. The imouto two-parter still makes me chuckle.
  • Faraway Paladin: A reincarnation isekai that thankfully is less JRPG and more regular D&D fantasy. The beginning was definitely the most interesting part, with young Will being raised by three powerful undead, but his adventures as a paladin are fun to watch in their own right. It’s just nice to have a straight up fantasy adventure, I guess. Also, the author knows what he’s doing with Will and Meneldor. I’ve seen parts of the manga and I’m considering continuing the story there, because oh boy did the anime run out of budget. They definitely leaned on the narration to make up for the lacking animation, and the sound design bordered on terrible. A lot of telling and not a lot of showing.

[up][up][up] Does the Lord El-Melloi directly follow after the series?

Overall, a solid season. 86, Dragon Quest and Ousama Ranking are bangers continuing to the next season. Heike Monogatari, Mushoku Tensei and Part 6 of Jojo were also fantastic. Plus a handful of decently interesting watches.
