I've seen Ending Aversion examples cut as "the trope is for people avoiding a work because they hear the ending is disappointing, not about people not liking the ending." That's how it's distinct from Fanon Discontinuity as it applies to non-fans.

From the Ending Aversion page "Hearing about all these things makes many people very wary. No one wants to spend dozens of hours dedicating themselves to something that will leave them slowly disappointed. Maybe the overall experience would have more than compensated for any supposed deficiencies of the ending, but the potential viewer has been scared off." This sound like it supports it.

My impression is Ending Aversion requires it have such notoriety even non-fans would be have heard of it and avoid the work for it. I've also seen it for examples that cause people to stop being fans of the series as opposed to just pretending the unliked parts didn't happen. Are either of those correct?

Is that/those the case or is it still being debated? Should I take this to TRS?

It's my understanding that both are needed for Ending Aversion to apply. If nonfans are avoiding a work because of an infamously bad ending, it's probably because the (former) fans complained about it a lot. If fans are complaining about the terrible ending, they probably stopped being fans because of the ending. However, if the example is just "people stopped being fans because the ending sucked" without mentioning people who avoided the work because of the bad ending, it's misuse. This is my understanding of Ending Aversion at least.

[up]Mass Effect 3 keep enough fans to convince them to revise the ending so it doesn't seem a requirement.

Hows this for Square Peg, Round Trope?

  • Ending Aversion is misused for any disliked ending. It requires the ending receive such backlash overshadowing the rest of the series that even non-fans hear of it and thus outright avoid the work as opposed experiencing it and being disappointed or make many fans lose interest in the work in its entirety as opposed to just pretending the unpopular ending didn't happen.

Been more than 3 days since I last posted. I will add this to Square Peg, Round Trope on the 1st unless I hear anything.

  • Ending Aversion is oft misused for any disliked ending, interchangeably with Fanon Discontinuity. It requires the ending receive such infamy or backlash even those who haven't seen the ending or non-fans hear about it AND people therefore avoiding the work or series in it's entirety as opposed to just pretending the unliked ending didn't happen.

Good to add? Any proposed changes or additions?

Updated. Added.
