TBF, rust is a serious problem, and metal is a lot harder to patch up on the go if the hull breaches for whatever reason.
Yeah, I don't know the full history of metal ships, but I do know it was more complicated than "if we make metal wide enough, it floats!" They had to invent new metallurgy and stuff.
