I went back like 5 pages and I couldn't find a thread on this, so I figured I'll start one myself. I watch too much card game anime.

First episode was... actually pretty alright. I both had high hopes coming into this as well as tempered expectation, but it's neither as bad as I dreaded it could be nor as good as I'd have really liked to be. The animation is great, the characters are endearing (if a bit trope-ey), the designs are cool and the pacing's alright. Thing is, though, for making the Shadowverse game the main draw, once they actually started to play, my enjoyment of the episode went down a notch. I think the battle was pretty clumsily handled with how they skipped half of it, which really shouldn't happen in a first episode.

Still, pretty stoked to see where this goes.

I'll run a one-man show if I have to.

Episode 2 was... not much better or worse than the first one. It still does the cardinal sin of skipping half the battle, which is absolutely terrible if their intent is to draw in new players. Luca Throwing the match instead of just beatin Hiiro outright also leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. Hiiro losing wouldn't have had any consequences to it and it'd be more indicative of his character if he defied the rumor rather than just casually skidded around it.

I'll give it another episode, but this show has a serious case of "nonsense plot" going on and it's dampening my enjoyment. It's pretty goofy even by card game anime standards.

I only tried the first episode, but it was kind of stupid. The whole phones are your deck thing is really what makes this so goofy. Instead of asking for a deck, MC asks for a smartphone. Which his gramps refuses, despite them basically being a commodity now. And then there's when the bully takes the girl's smartphone for losing a game.

It's one thing when a hobby item is stolen, it's another when an everyday tool, as well as source of personal information, is stolen. At that point, one should really be calling the cops.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet Unless I grew it. In that case, throw it in the trash.

Yeah, I don't think I've seen a single person like this plot point. Me included. They had the chance to make it a Shadowverse-only device, but instead they made it literally a smartphone. It really bangs on your suspension of disbelief.

They say as shadowverse is being played on peoples smartphones at this very moment.

But him not having a phone is indeed completely baffling. At least they could have said his old one was outdated and he needed a new one, with all his favorite stuff no longer playable.

The point isn't that people play it on their smartphones. The reason why it's stupid to still have it be a smartphone in-universe is that a smartphone is much more than just a vessel to play a card game. Everyone knows this. Therefor, if it is stolen in some way, you don't just lose your ability to card game. You lose a whole lot more than that.

Compare to Yu-Gi-Oh! ZeXal, for example. I make this comparison a lot in regards to SV's first episode because it pretty much follows the same plot structure beat-for-beat. We have our main character, his two goofy friends, and one of said two friends got their card gaming stolen away from them. The thing is, in ZeXal, what was stolen was just a deck. It has no utility outside of allowing you to play a match, unless you want to throw the cards like daggers ala Seto Kaiba. The bully character could've just as easily stolen the D-Pads and D-Gazers everyone uses, but that'd cause a whole host of nonsensical problems since those have outside-duel utility too. They're primarily used to make calls to others, like a phone would.

Compare that to Shadowverse, where they rolled the deck and D-Pad into one. Suddenly it becomes a very real issue when it's stolen. Not only did Mimori lose access to the game of Shadowverse, but also her contacts, photos, anything and everything really.

That's why keeping it as a smartphone is a dumb plot point if you want to go with the "bully steals stuff" route of things. They could've just made it a knockoff smartphone device that existed only for Shadowverse games and we'd avoid all this lunacy.

Still sounds like it's really nitpicky to me more than anything. Making a phone into a way to play a cardgame and someone only wanting it for that and that alone sounds pretty reasonable to me. I didn't want a cell phone for anything except games, and thats what I mainly use it for.

Yes but they literally showed in the episode itself the device wasn't just for the game.

And if you're going to try to convince me people don't use their cellphone to actually call someone once in a while, then that's very much the exception to the general rule. I barely use my phone and even I call my mom every odd occasion.

Episode 4 is probably the best episode so far. I really disliked 3, so this was a nice pick-me-up.

Alice is cute as a button.

And episode 5 is a bad episode again.

Anything that focuses on Hiro is really not doing the show any favors; not only is his shtick "Topdeck Ignis Dragon, win" every single time but also the writing just gets really bad around him. They acknowledge card packs in-universe which would be fine in any other anime, but for Shadowverse specifically it raises so many questions. Why is Hiro's deck competent enough to go toe-to-toe with incredibly skilled veterans when he, himself, is a newbie? Why is Takuma going around stealing smartphones for people being "weak" when those people could still just be building their decks? How the fuck is 10 packs worth more than a tablet and a bunch of idol merch?

Even taking out the asinine worldbuilding, the battle had some really headscratching writing. Kazuki explains Victory Blader's effect to Hiro, Hiro acknowledges this and saves his ping for next turn, and then... hiro forgets blader's effect right away? 'cause he acted surprised that Kazuki only took 7 damage instead of 10 from Ignis going face, but not only did Kazuki already say that a minute ago, but these two have battled before. You'd think they'd at least somewhat know what the other's cards are, especially if Victory Blader is the core of Kazuki's deck.

Not only that, but Kazuki says he 'trained a whole lot' to not being going face all the time... but earlier in the day, when battling hiro, he was still going face. And he was out running errands all day.

This show has some of the most nonsense writing I've ever seen.

Episode 6.

Bold declaration: this anime is only good when Hiro isn't a part of it.

It's insane to me how every character except our protagonist has layers to them that don't consist of just "SHADOBA TANOSHII" with proportionally much less screentime between them. Also insane to me how, despite that, Hiro is somehow the guy that magically impresses everyone and catches their attention. Dude doesn't do shit except topdeck ignis dragon every game, how is he the one to incite change? At least YGO has its protagonists working for friendship rather than just giving it for free.

Bring back my man Takuma.

I think at this point I'm watching out of a false sense of pride more than anything.

There is a lot wrong with this episode. The set-up, the powerscaling, Hiiro's magical ability to have the world bend around him... it's hands-down the worst episode so far. I was hoping the protagonist would lose, and when a show makes you want to root against the main character, it has done a pretty terrible job if that wasn't intentional.

Welcome to another episode of my declining mental state.

This week, we have plot holes out the wazoo.

Tune in next week for more!

No, but really. Kazuki and Mimori shouldn't have made the top 16, the brackets are more predictable than Yugioh filler duels, Alice put cards into her deck she's not allowed to play for ???reasons??? and Hiiro is still topdecking Ignis Dragon every match.

Not just that, but the split-screen when their smartphones were being looked in place genuinely looked awful. They couldn't even bother to split it up with a beam of light, nah, instead you get the hard cutout. Even I can edit better than that.

I wonder if there's anyone that actually likes what the show's doing out there, because this is a trainwreck so far. Reminder that this is allegedly a 48 episode anime, too.

Dear god.

It really didn't take them long to remove the best character from the tournament. And saddle her with nonsensical writing while they did it, too.

I'd say this is the best of Hiiro's battles so far, if only because he used literally any strategy other than "ignis dragon go brrrr" to win.

That being said, there are still a lot of issues with this pacing. Somehow Mimori didn't advance while Kazuki did, Hiiro still can't think of literally anything other than shadowverse and this whole tournament arc is a hare-brained scheme designed to give Hiiro a shitload of battles in a row. If you want to know what I mean by that last part, just watch the next episode preview.

Episode 10 is out.

First battle that didn't have a midgame skip and I appreciate that, but with how same-ey Hiiro is as a character, it doesn't feel any more exciting or suspenseful than the other ones. At this point I'll just have to wait until after the match against Lusia to see if, after that, this show has anything interesting to offer.

Episode 11.

The first thing to come out of Hiiro's mouth is "shadoba tanoshii."

I don't advocate for drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, but...

Gotta love the crowd caring way too much about Luca's feelings on Shadowverse. Why does it matter if he doesn't have a raging, Hiiro-tier hard-on for the game? They're there for an epic card duel. Granted, the MC is incapable of delivering that, but that's besides the point.

For that matter, what makes Hiiro so damn special anyway? That fairy dude was running a fun enough deck, Hiiro has yet to show any particular big-brain play (pretending that "I summon a monster after killing your burn-on-summon card" was a genius move is just insulting), and basically everyone else in the show has been more interesting to watch play.

Episode 13 happened.

We saw Mimori in a swimsuit, and that's pretty much the only thing I care about in that episode.

Latest episode has the two best characters Mimori and Alice tag-dueling against annoying bounty hunter ladies. Not a huge fan of the conflict they're bringing up between those two at the end of the episode, but hey, it's infinitely more entertaining than watching Hiiro stumble his way to a win against random one-offs, even if the rich girl was fun and should be a main character.

I love how this show is so bad that "The MC doesn't play a big role so this is automatically one of the best episodes" is a thing.

I know the episodes air every Tuesday but I remembered this thread existed and found it funny basically nobody here is watching this anymore.

As for my take: I'm still watching, but it's in more of a "I want to see how far this trainwreck goes" kinda way.

The fact the latest episode had Hiiro forget Lusia had a sister, despite telling him "would you want your sister to see you sad like this?" in episode 12, is so on-point for this show's quality of writing that I can't help but nod approvingly. It's widely theorised Hiiro is a psychopath who can not think about anything other than shadoba tanoshii, and I believe it.
